North launches ‘final assault’ on Jonathan

Barely 18 days to the presidential election, some stakeholders in the North have advised three leading presidential candidates to form an alliance to stop President Goodluck Jonathan.

They met on Monday night in Abuja with Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Congress for Progressive Change); Mallam Nuhu Ribadu (Action Congress of Nigeria); and Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau (All Nigeria Peoples Party).

The new coalition of Northern stakeholders is different from the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF), which is at the vanguard of the retention of the presidency by the North.

The Northern stakeholders, including a retired President of the Court of Appeal, met with the trio late into the night at a private residence in Abuja .

Members of the new group are professionals, youth leaders and members, civil society groups and some members of the Council of Ulamas.

It was learnt that 95 per cent of members of the new group are not politicians.

The Monday night session is considered to be the “North’s final assault” against Jonathan, should the three candidates succumb to pressure from the stakeholders.

The session made four demands from the candidates. They are:

•to save Nigeria from further drift and mismanagement by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP);

•not to allow presidency to slip away from the North in 2011;

•to form an alliance against the PDP to realise power shift to the North; and

•to sink their differences and allow for an alliance in favour of one of them.

A source at the session, who spoke in confidence, said: “All groups in the North and respected Northerners you can think of were at the meeting.

“The meeting was initially scheduled for Sunday but it was shifted to Monday night and it did not close till about 1am.

“Those at the meeting told the candidates that the stakes are very high and the dangers of allowing power to slip away from the region are daunting.

“They also raised issues why it has been difficult for the three candidates to form an alliance against the PDP when the North has every chance to win the presidential poll.

“They appealed to the candidates to sink their differences and agree to queue behind one of them during the presidential poll.”

None of the three candidates made any commitment at the session, it was learnt.

Another source said: “They promised to consult their parties accordingly on the new alliance proposal.”

The stakeholders are likely to meet again before the week end to take a decision because Northerners would have to be mobilised alongside the new focus”.

Responding to a question, the source said: “The session succeeded in bringing the candidates together - for the first time. This is a sign that something positive can come up.

“At all its meetings, the Northern Political Leaders Forum could not bring these candidates together.”

The bold step of the non PDP presidential candidates of withdrawing from the race and throwing their support behind Buhari is the only solution to the PDP problem. If this act does not happen, we can only wish for a run off - I am not optimistic about this eventuality.

Buhari must promise both ACN and ANPP substantial carrots to make their support easy to provide. We are indeed at a crossroad to success as a country. PDP, OBJ, IBB, are the main impediment we have had to progress as a country. Many prominent PDP members, OBJ, IBB, and all those business tycoons who are beneficiaries of the current corrupt system are going to do everything in their power to retain power. Insha Allah, they will not be able to stop this Buhari movement just as Clinton could not stop the Obama movement.

The future of our children and grand children is more important than the wishes of the thieving thieves we currently have in power. Lets for once, put tribal differences aside and admit that it is time for PDP to go - that party has done enough, its time for fresh air.

Nigeria will be great once more. SAI BUHARI, SAI ONE NIGERIA!!!

Then following this logic. the Yoruba are indeed the ones who are not politically united and do not speak with one voice. undecided

nope, you are wrong there

they have 3  vice presidential candidate and in this senario have no reason or what so ever to be united for 1 candidate (unless BB wink )

but also because if they block vote any candidate and the other candidate wins, then they lose their neutrality in nigeria

but if you look at it from another point of view, you are right

You are just a rabid hater always looking to indict the Yorubas of wrongdoing !!! How is not speaking with one voice , regarding the coming elections , a bad thing ? How can anyone sensible claim that it is a bad thing for yoruba folks to display choice in their voting pattern while remaining blind to how some have 100% embraced a candidate from their region or close to their ethnic stock while continuing to ignore his actions in office that shows , without a doubt , he is bad news?

If Yoruba vote well for a candidate with no Yoruba on the tickets (GEJ/Sambo) how is that a thing for any sensible person , not iredeemably damaged by ethnic hatred , to use against them? Does it not show , more than anyone else , we are looking beyond ethnic sentiments? Abeg go and sit down . It is the same as you rounded on Tinubu for commenting on the misrule of Abia till your own fellow Igbo men told you off unanimously .

I am happy for the Yoruba to not speak with one voice on this ocassion even if that may lead to electoral outcomes I personally do not want . Those who see what they see and are politically sophisticated plus genuinely democratic will know , in a modern senses , it shows advancement and greater political maturity. We are happy to be a region where people have their own minds rather than be led to adopt one position in ode to herd mentality. We want GEJ out but not to the extent of forcing people to vote against their will . That is not democracy and it amounts to acting like those we condemn.

Blame the opposition Presidential candidates for where we are today . Not Yoruba people . If the Yoruba folks , in Lagos for example , are ready to vote for a performing ACN Governor (Fashola) and a PDP presidential candidate then I don't see what is wrong with that because we must blame other Presidential candid for not doing enough to win their vote from a very poor incumbent PDP President . If you dissapear totally , as Atiku and co do, after elections only to come back in four years expecting a people to vote for you against an incumbent then I doubt your understanding of modern politics . After the election is over and you lose , you must immediately begin strategising for the next four years to mitigate against the power of incumbency which is very very strong in Nigeria . Set up an initiative or charitable organisation. Set up think thanks awareness groups etc . be active in opposition . Organise and lead protests to the National assembly when important bills , eg PIB , are not passed . When the Bills are eventually passed Nigerians will remember the role you played (as we remember Bakare for the SNG protests) and that will give you political mileage. Don't just dissapear , do nothing for Nigerians , and expect to show up in four years hoping that the misrule of the current Government will be enough to gain you a win . That may happen elsewhere but not in Nigeria because most Nigerians are still not politically sophisticated enough to totally eshcew sentiments when voting . Astitute and modern opposition candidates will understand this and do things to keep themselves visible and benefitting from the goodwill of Nigerians up till the next election instead of expecting all Nigerians , illiterates and sentimental voters in many cases, to just automatically sign up for the project of ousting the PDP.

Am glad a Nigeria I can be very proud of is in the horizon.

Tell Jonathan, you cannot eat your cake and have it. Zoning was to allow the minorities have a chance, but for greed he truncated it to chose a free for all fight. Imagine Jonathan, using 2015 (what should have been Ndigbo hope) to bargain with the North. Even SS may split for Buhari - how long do he need to wipe the tears of his people?

From here in Enugu, its BB all the way: I have never been this happy for Nigerian politics.
