Soyinka Criticises Igp On Use Of Cell Phones At Polling Stations by isaiaedem(m): 3:51pm On Mar 25, 2011
Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has condemned the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Hafiz Ringim restraining citizens from using cell phones and cameras to record during voting.

Soyinka spoke with reporters in Lagos after unveiling reclaimnaija.net platform, an electronic election monitoring tracking device, put together by Community Life Project (CLP).

He described the directive as "nonsense and illegal" and directed Nigerians to disregard the IGP directive by not only staying back, but to also record voting, counting and announcement of the results.

The Nobel laureate said that the IGP directive was tantamount to misdirection.

He said: "It is stupidity of the security agents to ban Nigerians from taking their cell phones and cameras to polling booths.

"If they do not go to polling booths, how would they monitor electoral misconducts; People should ignore it because it is contrary to electoral act," alleging that Police always confuse Nigerians just to sooth their paymasters.
