The Gérewol Associate in Nursing annual courting ritual competition among the Wodaabe Fula folks of Niger.
Young men wearing elaborate ornamentation and created up in ancient face painting roll up lines to bop and sing, vying for the attentions of nubile young ladies.
The Gérewol happens every year because the historically wandering Wodaabe Bos taurus herders gather at the southern fringe of the Sahara Desert before dispersing south on their time of year pastures.
The most illustrious gathering purpose is In-Gall in northwest Niger, wherever an oversized pageant, market and series of tribe conferences ensue for each the Wodaabe and also the pastoral Tuareg folks.
The particular dance event is named the Yaake, whereas alternative less illustrious elements bartering over dowery, competitions or artiodactyl mammal races among suitors make up the week-long Gérewol.
At the tip of the season in September, the Wodaabe visit In-Gall to assemble salt and participate at the Cure Salée pageant, a gathering of many wandering teams.
Here the young Wodaabe men, with elaborate make-up, feathers and alternative adornments, perform dances and songs to impress ladies.
