A stock exchange isn't really a reflection of the state of the economy of a country. Heck most companies in the real sector of the economy are actually doing badly except for a minute number of them i.e Telecoms and some Consumer goods industries. So to the lay man on the street, this isn't really good news for you. If you really want the state of a country check consumer spending, manufacturing output and other indices that are a real measure of what is on ground. The DJI , NASDAQ are at all time highs but the US is heading towards a default, balloning debt profile due to Covid 19. Even Bitcoin and lots of cryptos are skyrocketing. The explanation for why the Nigerian stock exchange might seem to be performing can be summarised succintly. Most of the growth in the stock exchange is actually due to asset price inflation. Because of Covid 19 lots of real sector activities has been on hold. Most governments have also been carrying out what we call Quantitative easing by printing money/taking loans to subsist most businesses during the Corona Period( we all know there isn't any trickle down economics that works as most of these funds end up in the hands of the ultra wealthy) which leads to more buoyancy for these set of people. Coupled with the fact that Inflation has been on the high side and most investors i.e these rich men are hedging those funds by buying up stocks to counter inflation. Check the trends of most bonds, metals like Gold and silver. Their values have gone through the roof when there isn't any evidence of real growth to back such up. Check most of these businesses with massively improved stock values and compare their earnings from 2019 and 2020 and you would see it is just speculations pushing the prices up and not any real growth. Such bubbles would naturally burst and those values would revert to their original prices with time. |
