Argentina's Senate approved a bill to legalize abortion Wednesday in an historic vote seen as a major victory for abortion rights advocates in the Catholic-majority country.

The Senate voted 38-29 to give millions of women access to legal terminations under a new law supported by President Alberto Fernández. The margin was expected to be much smaller.
Massive crowds of abortion rights activists and anti-abortion campaigners gathered outside the Palace of the Argentine National Congress to await the results, which came in the early hours of the morning after an overnight debate. Supporters of the bill greeted the news with loud cheers -- and, in some cases, tears of joy.
Gabriela Giacomelli, whose two sisters aborted illegally, called the scene "very emotional."
"We have been fighting for years," Giacomelli said. "I see young people now, though I hope they never have to abort, but if they do now they can do it safely."
Another abortion rights activist, Sofia Gonzalez, said she believed Wednesday was a "historic moment" in Argentina's history. "Starting today, I believe everything changes," she added.
proposed law will legalize abortion in all cases up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. Abortion in Argentina, South America's third-most populous country, is currently only permitted when a pregnancy results from rape or endangers the life or health of the woman.

In all other circumstances, abortion is illegal and punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

Abortion advocates hope Argentina's decision will spur similar movements in Latin America's other Catholic-majority states.

Tamara Taraciuk Broner, the acting deputy director of Human Rights Watch (HRW) Americas Division, said before the vote that if the law passed, it would "send a very strong message to the region that it is possible to move forward with legalization of abortion -- even in a Catholic country like Argentina."

Across Latin America and the Caribbean region, only Cuba, Uruguay, French Guiana and Guyana allow for elective abortions, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights. In Mexico City and the Mexican state of Oaxaca, abortions are also available on request, but are severely restricted throughout the rest of Mexico.

By contrast, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Suriname ban abortions in nearly all circumstances. Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama allow for abortion only if it's to preserve the woman's health or help save her life.

It depends on where your morality is.
They would argue with you that abortion is not murder even scientifically.
Some people don't see the unborn as humans but just blood in it's early stage and that it is just a removal of tissue and not murder.

Truth be told this is an argument that will continue for many many years as to whether the foetus can be termed a human being.

Also abortion happens everywhere making it legal means acknowledging a woman's right to choose and have access to safe abortion.Abortion is not a must it is a choice and in countries where it is even legal the rate of abortion is not that high because they have a good health care system with better methods to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

I must commend the people of Argentina for a step in the right direction no woman should suffer and be forced to keep a foetus she does not want.Family planning and birth control is key if a mother sees she has nothing to offer a child and government cannot help or do their part then let abortion be an option it is not a must to abort but it should be a choice to.

There are several ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies, killing of babies is not justifiable, labelling the foetus as a tissue or some other weird name doesn't change that at pregnancy a baby is formed in a woman's body.

That is your view.
Others see it differently and have the choice to terminate it if they want to you are not a woman leave the women to make their choices. You call it murder they call it tissue removal that it is why it is called a foetus not a baby abortion will not stop happening even in countries where it is illegal.

It is the truth.
You cannot force your view on others or legislate your own morality on others.

I will advise you study more on the debate and hear the arguments from both sides even if you hold on to your belief nobody is forcing you to change your stance abortion is not by force but of a choice and that option is available to those who want to use it that should not be your problem or concern focus on helping those children in need you can adopt or provide assistance to those that help underprivileged children that is better than obsessing about a foetus in a woman's body channel your mind to the children and babies who are living and in dire need of assistance not every pregnancy will be carried to full term.

I've heard both sides of the argument and so far none has seemed to justify killing of babies especially when there are several ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies, such policies lead to promiscuity and irresponsible behaviour. Last time I checked the child can be put up for adoption when he/she is born. Granted there are cases where the baby poses threat to the mother or some other scenarios but in majority of the cases it's women not wanting to take responsibility for their actions. So what happens when a woman wants to keep the baby but the father doesn't want it, should he forcefully terminate the baby since the baby belongs to both parents?

Make the several ways available if the severals ways don't work let the woman abort it is still an option and it should be her choice. If she wants to terminate or give the child up for abortion.
Lol there is no proof that legalising abortion leads to promiscuity or irresponsibility in Nigeria where it is illegal the things you mentioned abound. It is not your duty neither is it in your place to force a woman to keep a child she does not want to be responsible for what stops you from also putting responsibility on the father. The decision falls on the mother and the choice is her's whether or not the father agrees.T he choice is the woman's to make.A man does not force a woman to terminate against her will unless a compromise is reached

But a woman can terminate a man's child without compromise, impressive. Killing of unborn babies is not good, if a couple feel that they are not ready to have children they should abstain from sex or they use condoms/contraceptives rather than resorting to killing.

Yes it is the woman's body afterall and they can also reach a compromise and they may also want it married couples have abortions too.

Lol it is not murder it is a removal of tissue being the foetus a foetus is not a baby scientifically and that is how pro choice advocates or countries where it is legal see it.Your morality cannot be a template for other people.Married couples have abortion so they should abstain from sex right?even if the contraceptives work or not abortion must still be an option lol who made you judge and jury on how people should live their lives as long as it is not illegal.Abortion is not termed murder in those countries neither is it illegal there and it is in view of what their people want and how the law sees it so learn to respect it abortion will keep happening whether you like it or not it is a choice to make a no one forces anyone to have it because you do not support it does not mean others do not the law is not meant for you alone it is meant for everybody and those who choose to do it see it as an option which is why the law makes it available for such people

Na wa oooooo. I suppose this is one of the "advantages" of feminism. That was how I saw one "feminist's" comment on Twitter saying that abortion should be legalized, so she can abort her child if she discovers it's Male. Damn.....What's this world turning into
