I came across a thread where someone was complaining about a policeman on stop-and-check duty who hit a lady's nose with the butt of his gun, and he (with his colleagues on duty) quickly moved away from their duty posts and vacated the area after they saw that blood had started coming out from the lady's nose.
..
https://www.nairaland.com/6336869/police-officer-hits-lady-gun
..
The part that got my attention to the whole story was the part that said: “...Every effort by Focus Naija to contact the DPO of the Ekpan station for comments into the assault were unsuccessful.....”
..
In all the story, I couldn't even see where they mentioned the name of the Officer involved in the assault incident, not to talk of his number, or that of any of his colleagues. And she was expecting justice to be served verysoon??
She may Never get the justice she is seeking, and that's the blunt truth.
..
Even if the President of Nigeria demanded to see to the end of this case, he can't get anything meaningful out of the case.
In fact , the best that could happen is for the Police to invite the lady to the Ekpan Police Station to physically identify the Officer who assaulted her, and woe would betide her if she couldn't identify the officer in question - which is 98% possible, because the DPO, before the day of the invitation, would have known the whole truth about the assault incident; and because of “Esprit de Corps”, he would make sure the officers involved in the incident would be unavoidably absent on the day of the invitation. Or he would blatantly deny that it was not officers from his station that patrolled that axis on that very day in question.
..
What I am trying to say with all the narrative above is that: “We The Citizens Are Not Doing Our Best At Making The Officers To Have A Sense Of Service To Us - The Citizenry.”
..
The “Name-Tag” and “Number-Tag” on the uniforms of Police Officers (and those of all other Military and Paramilitary Personnel) are there for identification purposes. They are there mainly for the consumption of the public. And it is so painful that we - The Citizens - are not even using it at all.. Lots of Police-Brutality and Police-Assault stories are flying everywhere, yet none of these stories made the slightest attempt to identify the officers involved.
..
Let us begin to form the habit of greeting these officers by their names. That alone would save us a lot from them.
It's Not Difficult.
Before you talk to them, just look at the top of the breast-pocket and quickly see the name there on the Name-Tag and greet him with it..
Something like: “Good Morning Officer Ekpan, how are you today?”.. With that alone, he will apply enough decorum and courtesy while attending to you.

Don't just stop your greeting at “Good Morning Officer”.. You have to complete it.
This is because, not only that the incomplete greetings gave him the room to feel that you have not fully identified him yet, you yourself may easily forget the name you saw on his Name-Tag if you didn't use it. You have to call him by his name because it is easier to remember a name you saw and called out and also interacted with.
..
And should there be any case of arguments afterwards, even before any assaults might have happened, you should continue to call him by his name., and not just saying: “Officer let me explain....”
..
I am looking forward to the day the police would start to genuinely help Nigerians without intimidations and assaults.

I hope this little suggestion would go a long way in savings us from the excesses of all the Uniform Personnel in Nigeria, but most especially, The Police.

I understand your point.
Those Rich People already know highly placed Police Officers such as CPs, AIGs and so on, whom they would call and they would just order the smaller Officer to back off their harassments.
...
But for the rest of us that do not know any high-ranking officer, we can still get them to be civilised in the way they treat us.
Be Civil with them first, and you will see them treat you well in return.
But then, even if they didn't treat you well in return, reporting them and exposing them would be made a lot more easier.

Report Them To Social Media Mbok...!!
Taking them to court takes a very long time to come through.
Social Media reporting is always faster.
..
I know about “Esprit de Corps”..
That thing dey spoil a lot of show for ordinary citizens.

Hahahahahahahaaahaa..
cheesy cheesy grin grin grin..
On a normal day, we are not supposed to be seeing military personnel frequently.
They really do not have anything to do with ordinary civilians that had not instigated or caused any severe security situation.
..
But then, they too should learn how to be civil when interacting with civilians. That though wouldn't stop us from learning to greet them with their names.
