Jonathan orders MDAs to patronise Nigerian made vehicles
By Chesa Chesa Snr State House Correspondent, Abuja

President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to buy vehicles assembled in Nigeria to encourage local industries and boost employment.

He gave the order at the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja on Wednesday, according to Information and Communications Minister, Labaran Maku, who briefed reporters.

In all future contracts, especially when they need machinery, MDAs are also to give priority to locally assembled or produced machines or vehicles.

Jonathan directed the National Economic Adviser to develop a new tariff that protects local industries.

“This is important because if our industries are to produce again and if we have to encourage employment, it has become necessary to emphasise a change of attitude in preference for those businessmen and women who have taken their time and resources to invest in the Nigerian economy,” Maku said.

He added that the Finance Ministry is working with insurance companies and banks to develop a consumer credit facility which will be limited to made-in-Nigeria products.

“This is to ensure that consumers are encouraged to buy made-in-Nigeria goods.”

The government plans a public enlightenment campaign on the scheme.

The FEC meeting was preceded by Jonathan’s inauguration of two Presidential committees on public sector reforms and security awareness.

The 16-member Committee on Review of Reform Process in the Public Sector, chaired by Adamu Fika, is to evolve strategies that will re-engineer the public service for better service delivery as well as clear grey areas between the Office of Head of Service and the Federal Civil Service Commission.

The 19-member Committee on Public Awareness on Security and Civic Responsibility, headed by Lateef Adegbite, is to engender communal commitment to security and peaceful co-existence.

Jonathan charged both committees to discharge their duties diligently and with patriotism, pledging full government support and assistance.

Good man.

It is exactly what the country needs. Any of the inferiority complex stigma that is attached to Nigerian goods should be wiped away with the FG massive patronage. Everyday Nigerians will easily follow suit.

This is a fantastic development. The most important thing out of this is the encouragement it will give local entrepreneurs to replicate the successes of INNOSON, Nigeria's first indigenous car manufacturer, by establishing more car manufacturing plants.

Good move!
Please create a quality standard for all the local companies (if they don't have one)

Probably better to attack the problem from the other side, reducing the cost of Nigerian made products.

That is a long term target that can only be satisfactorily targetted through money policies and the power roadmap; whereas giving custom to the companies immediately impacts their bank balance.

^-- Just seems like an inefficient use of resources. We spend billions of $ subsidizing natural gas, petrol. . .  now cars too? What next, pounded yam?

Is this truly the best use of finite resources? I'd prefer if rather than just GEJ making seemingly orders, there was a feasibility study attached with it. Even something as simple as, "For ever $100 million we spend on auto subsidies, we create X jobs."

If X=5, 5, or 1000, a terrible use of resources. If X is 100,000, not a terrible idea. For values in between, then more nuanced.

Let's stop deceiving ourselves.

Why can't president Goodluck Jonathan replace 50% of the cars in his convoy and his personal ride with Assembled-In-Nigeria cars??

How many of us here are willing to buy assembled-in-Nigeria cars??

Which Agency in Nigeria is responsible for vehicle safety testing and safety rating??

Cars that cost more than their Toyota, and other foreign counterparts.

We want to subsidize and promote everything in this country. Subsidize public entities, subsidize private companies.

HERE'S A NOVEL IDEA: Why not just subsidize industries with the potential to compete internationally.

Why not push for further patronization of Nigerian Agricultural products, Furniture, and such industries with potential.

@ekt_bear

WE REALLY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH RESOURCES FOR THE NONSENSE THIS GOVERNMENT IS DOING.

^-- I'm mostly trying to be diplomatic; I think that this is a terrible idea (unless I see data suggesting otherwise.) I hashed out why a few months ago, but was accused of tribalism/bigotry/etc.

Honestly, I don't care too much anymore. Let me open up my own inefficient factory too and come chop gov't money  cool

It is time for us to protect our local industries. Once we build up our auto industry, we can export our automobiles around the world.

Simple as abc

When the president replaces his S500 BENZ to a made in Nigeria car - at that point - i will immediately do the same - until then the policy is bull sh it.

If we cannot patronize Nigerian plastic companies to buy garbage bins, which easier to manufacture in 9ja compared to cars, how can any one believe this political talk will make any impact. Beaf, we are not deceived by your benefactor's dubious statements. Just as someone has said above, GEJ should lead the way by changing all the cars in his convoy to 9ja assembled ones. BTW we are still assembling cars in 9ja and not making them o! Apparently a PhD holder with the name tag GEJ does not know the difference between 'made in Nigeria' and 'assembled in Nigeria'.

Subsidies? You are very very confused sir. wink

There is no word about subsidies, rather its about govt purchasing vehicles from our local manufacturers to improve the bank balances, perception and custom of our local plants.
Govt will buy the vehicles they need, regardless of where they come from anyway; so sourcing all vehicles from the appropriate Nigerian plants is a huge bust, this is especially so for Innosun, our first indegenous vehicle manufacturing plant. Way to go! cool

jonathan orders,
imo state gov ,
local govt chairman orders,
ward councellor orders,
my father orders,
and i order,
beaf orders,
seun orders,
at the end of the day, everybody orders,
whatever happens to leadership by example.

when Jesus Christ was teaching his disciples on how a leader shld be, he served them with waters to wash their feet and hands. whatsoever a man preaches, he shld practise.
orders are only important in the military and that is why fela called them zombie.
we are not zombie here and we will not listen to his orders.
let jonathan start using those cars himself and we will follow.
if a man buys a N7.5b jet to move arround and then order us to patronise buy a made in nigeria car, we will call him a deciet or a hypocrise.
what if made in nigerian cars are more expensive than the made in germany cars?
it is obvious made in nigerian products are more expensive compare to the ones from abroad because of the cost of production here.
this good orders of jonathan is just a round peg in a square hole. he shld do the right things and stop giving orders because his orders have no weights. he can give his orders to his children and wife.

As usual, make orders and we all cream and fall in line!

How is this meant to boost our local economy? How many cars will the MDA's buy vis-a-vis job creation? First, he should do away with his Senegalese tailors and lay down favourable environment for investment which as a PRESIDENT, HE SHOULD KNOW HOW TO!

Barking orders is just a Buhari way of doing things and He is meant to offer something different!

When they start making something equivalent to an S500 benz car in Nigeria, but at this point the government would patronise the ones available.

It is a great move, however, why dont we start by investing in refining our own crude oil.
Why dont we start by making sure there is power in Nigeria, cos what is the use of industries when there is no power to manufacture things, what do we really produce?
What is the use of the law, where there is no money made available to people that have the brain to make things happen.

this is like a house without a foundation.

But thinking in the right direction
Re: Jonathan Orders FG Parastatals To Patronise Nigerian Made Vehicles by blacksta(m): 3:58pm On Mar 31, 2011
Lol

The only orders ever carried out from GEJ with 100% implementation is when GEJ  orders the army or police to shoot on sight anybody they  deem fit  that is causing disturbance of peace.
Re: Jonathan Orders FG Parastatals To Patronise Nigerian Made Vehicles by Nobody: 4:01pm On Mar 31, 2011
considering the fact that police and army brass are already issued peugeots this is kind of ridiculous

gej ordering something that is already partially in place

The same JEG who approve the purchase of billion naira worth of DUST BINS few month ago has suddenly woken up to appreciate made in nigeria cars?(assembling plant to be run on generators?)
Face of deceit. Textile, plastic, embroidery industries employing millions re al dead.
We import cups, tyres, slippers, packers, dust bins, spoons, toothpick, tissue paper, biros, exercise books, yoghurt, can drinks, salt, milk, rice, tin tomatoes, butter, textile, bulbs, wires, padlocks, papers, detergent and the commonest of basic household utensil (to mention fem)that can be produced in nigeria in a twinkle of an eyes but Dummy GEJ is talking about cars.
He has lost touch wit reality.

No qualms  why not encourage innoson to design a presidential concept car  - Just like the ones designed, built in the U.S and used by Obama .

To sane people  - The best  and easiest way to lead  is simply by Example  and not backing orders that wont see the light of day.

GEJ SHOULD ALSO PATRONIZE MADE IN NIGERIA SCHOOLS BY WITHDRAWING HIS CHILDREN FROM THEIR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TO THE PUBLIC SCHOOL IN WUSE.

HIS WIFE SHOULD STOP GOING TO SHOP IN DUBAI AND PATRONIZE MADE IN ABA.

HYPOCRITES ARE WORSE THAN SINNERS.
