The Nigeria government will soon begin construction of a rail line linking Port Harcourt to Boko Haram in Maiduguri, Bornu State. What does the South East gain from being connected to this part of Nigeria? Why does the Nigerian government refuse to build a coastal rail that would link Calabar with Lagos? Clearly, the economic impact will be greatest in the South.

Calabar to Lagos is clearly the smarter project.

The coastal railway benefits Nigeria first, the South to North projects benefit us but also China, and guess who we get loans from.
The rail that runs to the interior of the country from the coast is beneficial to the Chinese because it aids in resource extraction (from both the North and Niger), clearly, however, the coastal railway is the most economically beneficial to Nigeria.

embarassed embarassed To be completed in 2079. They'll borrow and loot the first batch of funds, borrow again and delay the second one, a new government regime will emerge and cancel the contract or halt its progress. By the time they'll remember it again and decide to restart the project it will be a new set of borrowing for a third time and siphoning of funds by the new minister and his companions, the cycle continues for generations.
