Lagos Police Command Continues Its Raid On Nightclubs, Fails To Arrest Fashola by lekanolas: 10:57am On Jan 16, 2021
The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday night continued its raid on nightclubs who violate the COVID-19 protocols.

The police team led by the Commissioner of Police in state, Hammed Odumosu arrested scores of youths partying at several clubs on the Island and Surulere in tandem with COVID-19 enforcement protocols.

There was , however a drama when the police team stormed the Eagle Club on Adeniran Ogunsanya Street in Surulere .

On arrival at the club, the security personnel on duty were said to have refused to open the gate for the police team to gain access into the premises.

The security personnel were said to have informed the police team that there was an order from above that the gate should not be opened.

They, however, allowed Odumosu and few of his team into the premises to see those who were inside the club.

On sighting the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, Odumosu ordered his officers to leave.

The Police Commissioner later had a brief discussion with Fashola before joining his team outside the premises.

With Fashola were top members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Surulere including a former Executive Secretary of Surulere Local Government, Mrs. Hussein Bamidele.

Just look at the way this was reported. It would make you think that Eagle Club was a night club, wouldn't it?

Do you know what Eagle Club is?

National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company (NOCHEM) was a joint venture between Shell and the Nigerian Government (NNPC). They operated the National petrol stations and sold Shell and NNPC products like Sheltox Insecticide.

NOCHEM's logo had an eagle in it and so a lot of things that were associated with the company were called Eagle.

For example, National sponsored the biggest amateur boxing tournament in Nigeria in the 1970s and '80s and it was called Eagle Belt.

NOCHEM also had a famous staff club in Surulere and it was called Eagle Club. It had a football field and other sports facilities. It also has a hall.

Eagle Club was famous for hosting weddings, meetings, parties and other such events and although National no longer exists (the petrol stations were bought by Conoil), the Eagle Club is still used for this purpose.

I attended a fantastic wedding at the Eagle Club hall in 1985, but now-a-days weddings are held in a huge marquee that's set up on the old car park.
