Nigerian airlines are sooo pathetic

You know, Airlines with 3 or 4 functioning airplane telling us how they are about to re-shape the air industry....

none of them talking about more customer satisfaction, crashing the price, less cancellations....

I keep on hearing certain players in the aviation sector whining about how challenging and almost unprofitable it is to participate in the aviation sector. Yet, every time I blink, a new airline gets floated. Now, this time, it's going to be four at once taking to the skies.

How then do we explain this extraordinary phenomenon? I thought the sector kills start-ups. So, why are these new firms popping up so quickly despite the multi-pronged issues in that sector?

The ones complaining are the operators who plan to operate for a very long time and grow with lots of investments. Watch closely the CEO of associated airlines , Azman and airpeace have been at the forefront fighting for reforms in the sector. The others are only attracted by the short terms gains they’ll make and exit the space.

For instance at its peak arik was generating between $7m and $10m daily with its financiers living in luxury and spend as he so wished. As with aviation they were unable to meet up their operational expenses owing service providers , government, banks and MROs to the tune of 300 billion naira . AMCON has seized the airline but the owner has moved on . The company is in debt not the CEO. Many of these airline operators are going in to cash out for the next few years and exit .

The article just made mention of 4 new players coming into the sector.

And you will also agree with yours sincerely that some of the airlines flying around right now were not there a few years ago. Many are pretty much new entrants.

What is really the attraction? I am already getting some real answers to that effect.

Good one, more job creation.
We also need more private investors in the railway sector.
Also more Mobil network Telecom operators, am tired of the existing ones.

Even though we know it's our looted money, we thank God they didn't take it to USA or Dubai to invest; they are actually investing it in Nigeria - that's okay by me.

Doesn't matter how many airlines, railways, and roads you build.

If the government is unable to generate a GDP and execute global business.. Those local businesses will fail

All the operators are attracted by the high revenue and are there for the quick grab. They come in and get out of the business after cashing out. This is why the government has not taken the operators seriously. But recently govt are beginning to give Azman and airpeace a benefit of doubt because of their years in operation (7 years , ), huge investments in the sector and the consistency with which they’ve been pushing for reform particularly the CEO of airpeace and associated airline.

The model they operate is to buy a 20 year old aircraft for $4 million and operate It for 18 months . A 20 year old 737-500 can earn the airline 25 million naira daily . With two or three of this a cashflow of 50-70 million naira trickles in daily. As it’s coming the operators spend and enjoy them selves . After 18 months NCAA will mandate them to go for a heavy maintenance which they do . When the MRO bills them $1.8million they are usually unable to pay and dump the aircraft . They return to the market and pick another one to continue the cycle .

On another hand they collect VAT and PSC on behalf of firs and FAAN. Most times they don’t remit these monies . The cycle continues till they are heavily indebted and exit the business.

In east Africa , Ethiopian or Kenyan tend to buy new planes that will be under warranty for the first 6 years . They fly it day and night generating revenue from passengers and cargo. After 7 years they sell it without incurring huge maintainance cost and buy another new generation aircraft. The new aircrafts they buy consumes far lesser fuel than the 20 year olds . Also they maintain their aircrafts in-house thus saving costs . They also train their pilots in house as they own simulators . Non of our operators in vest in training , MRO and repairs which is another indication that they are in the business for quick wins

They have not placed an order for A220 and it takes about 2 years between a firm order and delivery. They are starting out with ATR-72 turbo props.
