LAGOS – Despite recording tremendous success in tackling criminal activities in Oyo State since assumption of office, Governor Seyi Makinde is currently contend­ing with a bigger challenge, which is the influx of bandits and herdsmen into the state through the Saki bor­der, Daily Independent has gathered.

Recently, cases of kidnapping in the state have been on the rise, which a lot of the victims who were able to regain their freedom had traced to suspected herdsmen.

Police sources in the state, who spoke with Daily Independent, said the rising state of insecurity in the state was becoming worrisome as cases of armed robbery had been on a decline between 2019 and 2020.

“The recent cases of kidnapping and other insecurity challenges in the state are not due to local cases as armed robbery has been greatly reduced to about 45/50%.

“The statistics of armed robbery cases recorded in Oyo State from 2019 to 2020 shows that while we have a total number of 182 cases in 2019, 2020 was 123. This shows that the governor’s effort to secure Oyo is working.

"The new form of crimi­nality now is banditry (ma­jorly kidnapping) by invading herders.

“Men of the state security outfit, Operation Burst, last week, arrested 47 armed herd­ers suspected of attempting a reprisal attack in the Oke- Ogun/Ibarapa area.”

The governor had, in De­cember, raised the alarm over foreign criminals sneaking into Oyo State through Saki while warning of their poten­tial danger.

“For instance, Saki shares an international border and it is more of an international issue because we have bandits all the way from Mali that are trying to cross.

“Once they gain entrance into anywhere they can oper­ate, they will stay there,” the governor had said.

Daily Independent gath­ered that Governor Makinde, as part of moves to tackle the activities of the herdsmen, ordered Amotekun operatives to go into the thick forests of Ibarapa East, Ibarapa Central, and Ibarapa North, as well as Iwajowa local government areas where kidnappers and bandits have infiltrated and turned into their abode.

The exercise, which was done in collaboration with some native Fulanis, led to the death of some bandits while others were handed over to the police.

A security expert said the agenda of the herders and bandits is to turn the South West into a theatre of war us­ing Oyo State as a launch pad.

“It is this new form of crim­inality, which is being tackled, that many are talking about.

“The agenda is to turn the South West into another the­atre of war and Makinde has vowed to resist that,” he said.

If Makinde likes he shouldn't support Sunday's deadline to herdsmen, he should allow them take over Oyo.
