Nigerian women have continued to garner achievements that have brought them into the limelight in society. They have been celebrated and used as models to represent the strength and ability of the female gender. In light of this, we have gone through the country’s history to make a list of women across tribes who gained prominence. And have continued to be celebrated because of the decisions they made to sustain their kingdoms.

You’ve probably heard of the story of Moremi Ajasoro, who saved the people of Ife from the constant enslavement of the Ugbo people, whom scholars have stated are not related to the Igbo tribe in Nigeria.

History has it that Moremi was originally from Offa. But she moved to Ife after she married King Oranmiyan.

The Ugbo people were referred to as Forest people by the Ife. They dressed as terrifying masquerades and, this led the Ife to believe they were spirits that could not be conquered.

Moremi sought the help of the river goddess Esimirin, allowed herself to be captured, and ended up as one of the wives of the king of Ugbo because of her beauty. This was how she discovered the secret of the Ugbo warriors and subsequently escaped to Ife to help her people conquer the Ugbo on their next attack.

What made Moremi’s sacrifice for the Ife more significant was that the river goddess Esimirin demanded her only child, Oluorogbo, as a reward for helping her defeat the Ugbo people. And Moremi remains a legend in Ile-Ife even until now. Her 42ft statue, the tallest in Nigeria, can be found in the Ooni’s palace. It was installed by the current Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi.
