The remains of the former president of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings was committed to mother earth at about 3.25pm this afternoon in Accra.

He will be remembered by Ghanaians as a leader who sacrificed so much for his country. He loved his country passionately and United his people together with a strong sense of patriotism.

He taught them that hard work pays. He was a de-tribalised leader, who led by example.

He ate with the poor, was a support to the widows and friend to the less privileged.

Rawlings will be missed by Ghanaians and all lovers of genuine and proactive leadership.

May his soul rest in peace.

How many African leaders could carry bags of cocoa on their heads along, with his citizens as head of state?

How many African presidents could work with engineers constructing railway tracks?

How many African leaders lead their citizens to the farm to start an agricultural revolution?

How many our leaders sat with and ate with the poor regularly as they discussed their problems and proffered solutions?

How many of our past leaders could still go out on their own initiative to clean street drains and control traffic without inviting the media.

Rawlings did all this and more.
