A Nigerian man has built a house in Kaduna using 14,800 sand-filled plastic bottles as bricks.

The man identified as Yahaya Ahmed, an engineer and the director of a non-governmental organisation, Developmental Association of Renewable Energies in Nigeria (DARE), explained the house was built by his organisation to encourage recycling of waste materials.


He added the initiative deserves to be encouraged as it would also create jobs and ensure a safer environment for all in Nigeria.

Ahmed said workers filled the plastic bottles with sand and linked them at the neck by an intricate network of strings to build the house, which he said is the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

Said he: "It’s the cheapest house that everyone can construct without spending much money because the building materials are available on the streets and trash dump centres,” he told journalists at the site located at unguwar -Yalwa on the Kaduna Zaria road.

According to him, the plastic house has three rooms, a toilet and a kitchen.

He said: "The house is 20 times stronger than brick walls houses and can last for over 300 years if constructed properly and carefully. It is fireproof, bulletproof, earthquake-resistant and can adapt to all kinds of climate changes, desertification and deforestation.

“It is the cheapest house to build in this generation with waste plastic bottles on the streets polluting our environment and causing more problems like flood and other disasters in the communities," Ahmed said.

Creativity is meant to save resources and reduce stress. I am sure he expended more resources at filling those plastics with sand and still buying cement to make the structure solid.

All the same he has done his own and I am sure it will give him joy which is good

if yours was functional you won't even ask if my brain is.
that aside, till date the white folks still make a large amount of their houses from wood which is traditionally their means of shelter from ages with modernising it to fit the modern age.
the argument here should be how do we modernise the use of mud to fit into this contemporary age. the western world is doing well with their traditional things why discard ours?
I always look up to the western wood type of house but the fear of inferno and security is my challenge. the use of mud comes even cheaper to brick only update them would do, example is the fired bricks.
forget about insults we all are out here to cut a edge to achieve a better society.
now that the bourgeoisie are increasing the price of cement to their own advantage at our own detriment, what do we do? we can modernise our traditional materials, same way we are modernising our traditional clothing attire.

my question would be polymer and wood which does stand the test of time most?
your answer would be as good as mine. even the polymer might out do mud if not for our closeness to the equator as a result our extreme weather condition, if can still remember my geography well (I stand to be corrected by geographers).
the possible weight that might have proven to be a burden to the bottles due to their hollowness has be cushion by chucking mud into their hollow space.
another concern should be inferno, which might put doubt as a result of suctioning effect the mud would later give (I might not be 100% here), but if only we could have organisation that can process this research and run an inferno test to see how it would hold.
if not for our corrupt leaders, putting this up for a low cost housing for the less privileged won't be to bad but they won't for it won't give more to embezzle so the concrete that won't see the light of the day would suit them.

Assuming that, there is an innovation on muds to enable plain and patterned construction... Also, to allow nails to hold firm for furnitures... That will be a great innovation.
