In 2008, the National Stadium held gymnastics, trampoline, wheelchair basketball and other competitions. At the 2022 Winter Olympics, men’s ice hockey and women’s ice hockey will be held here, as well as the para ice hockey games of the Beijing Paralympic Winter Games. It is a veritable "double Olympic venue".

Among the seven major events of the Beijing Winter Olympics, ice hockey is the only ball event. Ice hockey has a strong influence in the world. The two-year reconstruction project includes the addition of winter Olympic ice hockey games and service functions in the main hall, the conversion of the auxiliary hall into a dressing area during the game, and the expansion of an ice hockey training hall on the north side of the stadium. The total area of ​​the renovated venue is about 98,000 square meters, and the appearance is maintained as much as possible. The exterior facade of the extension part is consistent with the original building in terms of roof shape, facade material selection and spatial scale division. .
