Nigeria Spends $2 Billion On Generators In 20 Years by Shehuyinka: 7:16am On Jan 30, 2021
THOUGH emissions from electric generators contribute major health and environmental hazards in Nigeria, the country spends huge foreign exchange importing the alternative power sources. According to data from the United Nations International Trade Statistics Database, UN Comtrade, Nigeria has spent not less than 2.4 billion dollars on importation of generating sets in the last 24 years.

UN Comtrade, the largest depository of international trade statistics, captures Nigeria’s generator imports between 1996 and 2019.
In 2013, the country imported 262.5 million dollars worth of generators, the highest in two decades.
The importation of generators has been on the rise since 1996 and reached the zenith in 2013.

This is not surprising as the average cumulative power supply received per day by Nigerian households between 2013 and 2015 was below 6 hours per day, according to a survey by NOI Polls.

In fact, the average operational capacity of power infrastructure in the country is estimated at 3,879 (MW).

The poor power supply in the country has, therefore, forced Nigerians to seek alternative power sources. Between 2015 and 2019, Nigerians have spent nearly 500 million dollars on importation of generators.

It is worth noting, however, that only 37 percent of the amount expended on generators in 2018 was spent in the subsequent year. This necessarily does not mean that there was an improvement in the power supply.

In fact, the average daily supply of 3,800 megawatts (MW) in 2018 dropped to 3,775MW in 2019.

President of the Nigerian Association of Energy Economics, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, once described the energy sector in Nigeria as ‘a dismal failure.’
A direct effect of the poor power supply is attributed to the 77.5 percent Nigerians who have resorted to purchasing and using alternative sources of power such as generators and others, according to NOI Polls.

Nigeria is among the top six countries generating energy by back-up generators. Others are India, Iraq, Pakistan, Venezuela, and Bangladesh.

No,I thought power has been fixed based on detective Fash submission.

He once told us that "fixing the power sector is not a rocket science". Its been 6years now and we are still here.

Why am I even surprised, they also promised;

To lead the war for terrorism from the front, but we all know they are doing that from the secured section in Aso villa.

They will make 1 naira equal to 1 dollar.Sure we are close grin.

They will create millions of job.yes as we speak,Npower job have tripled in number.

Fuel according to them will be sold at the rate of 47naira.Well this promise was fulfilled to Mr President's zombies, they now buy fuel at that rate.

Ban on government officials from going abroad for medical treatment. We know the first person to renege on this promise.

Building one of the fastest-growing emerging economies in the world with a real GDP growth averaging 10 per cent annually. We this according to our own Mr lie,has been achieved, yes rice is everywhere, we now export rice to Malaysia shocked.

The promise too much, if you remember any one just mentally add am.

I am 99.99% sure the money is far more than $2B. We have a challenge with record-keeping in Nigeria. The number of generators that have passed through our porous borders will be like x10 of what they have on this record.

When a number 2 citizen of a country has a company that import the largest number of generators into the country, how will they ever want us to have electricity?
Why won't they do everything for our darling nation to be in perpetual darkness.
Anuofias.

May it never be well with all the fraudsters castigating sane, honest and hardworking Nigerians that voted out the party of thieves that looted and raped our nation for 16 years of failure.

What's Nigeria business with Climate change?

Btw, this is one of the reasons Atiku will never be president of Nigeria..

Instead of him to think of how to increase our electricity generation when he had the opportunity/power, he was busy formulating how to import more generator to the country

Far underestimated..... abi they are only talking of generators for home use ....The cost of running those generators is much more than what one can imagine...if we arent dependent on generators... we would have little or no need to subsidize PMS and AGO, the environment would be cleaner, cost of lots of products n service would be lesser...... without Power that giant of Africa sumtin we are talking about is Dead if there are 50 Steve Jobs that are full-blooded Nigerian, na for country wey get the basics dem go operate , pay tax, employ people ....All the brains and talents in this country will eventually get an alternative passport, their productive years will be used to develop another nation that values them....Its Canada, US, UK, Germany today........make we no begin hustle for Ghanaian Passport

Sometimes I wonder if u ppl think about these excuses before making dem. Are Generator importers more powerful than Transformer importers? Or more powerful than the govt? Why haven't they also sabotaged the Solar and inverter business?

I just hope we can solve energy issue in Nigeria, if we have a stable power supply. Nigeria would have been the best place to invest. Man power available and very cheap
