In February 1980, the 13th Winter Olympic Games held in Lake Placid became the first Olympic Games China participated in after returning to the Olympic family. At that time, China sent 28 male and female athletes to take part in 18 individual events such as skating, skiing and biathlon, but none of them entered the top 6.



In 1984, the 14th Winter Olympic Games was held in Sarajevo, the former Yugoslavia. China sent 37 athletes to participate. Chinese Taipei also has 14 athletes. This is the first time that Chinese athletes from both sides of the Taiwan Strait have participated in the Olympic Games at the same time.



What made Chinese athletes happy with gold medals was that in the 15th Calgary Winter Olympic Games in 1988, Li Yan won the gold medal in 1000 meters and bronze medals in 500 meters and 1500 meters in women's Short Track Speed Skating (listed as the performance item of this winter Olympic Games). Four years later, in the 16th Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, ye Qiaobo, a famous Chinese athlete, fought hard with injuries and won two silver medals in speed skating in the 500m and 1000m. Li Yan won the silver medal in short track speed skating in the 500m, which is a "zero breakthrough" for China in the Winter Olympics.



At the 19th Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, USA in 2002, Yang Yang won two gold medals of 500m and 1000m in short track speed skating. For the first time, Chinese athletes stood on the highest podium of the Winter Olympic Games. In the following two Winter Olympics, Wang Meng, a new generation of Chinese short track speed skater, won four gold medals.
