Text: Gen 2:18-25

What is Polygamy?
This is a kind of marriage which a man marries more than one wife.

What is Marriage?
Marriage is the first institution established by God Himself. God gave it as a gift to Adam and Eve. It is the union between one man and one woman (Gen 2:24)

Polyandry?
This is the idea of a woman getting married to more than one man.

Consequences of Polygamy
Polygamy/polyandry is unbiblical. It is not the original purpose of God for marriage in the beginning. The consequences are very great:
1. It creates bitter rivalry between family members
2. It can lead to witchcraft in the name of seeking for protection for children among the wives.

Some Biblical Consequences.
1. Abraham
He married Hagar the maid, out of pressure from his wife, Sarah because she was unable to bear him children.
The union led to bitterness between Sarah and Hagar. Also, the descendant of Ishmael (the product of the union which was not from God) became a thorn in the flesh of the body of Christ till today.

2. Jacob
He served Laban to marry Rachael but was received by his father-in-law who married him off to Leah, Rachael's sister. But because Jacob loved Rachael, he had to marry her and became a polygamous man.
Jacob created disaffection so much between the two sisters. This jealousy and envy spread from mothers to children and these made Joseph's brothers sell him to slavery.

3. David
He married more than one wife. The consequence is that Ammon raped his half sister, Tamar, and Absalom murdered Ammon because of his rape offence(2 Sam 13:1-14). Also, there was a rivalry contest for the throne between Solomon and Adonijah (1Kings 1:1-5)

4. Solomon
David's son, Solomon had many wives and concubines (1000 in total). The strange and unbelieving women turned his heart and led him away from God into idolatry. As a result, the Spirit of God departed from him.

Polygamy is evil!
Brethren, God only recommends one man with one wife. Let us obey God by following His Will for us in marriage. To have a peaceful and loving home, we MUST follow the manual and instruction of the manufacturer of marriage, God.

Polygamy causes a lot of strife and unhealthy rivalry. So run away from it.

Prayer
1. Holy Spirit, purge my heart from the spirit of Polygamy, in the name of Jesus.

Jesus is Lord. Jesus is coming soon. Repent from your sins. Accept Him as Your Lord and Saviour. Tomorrow may be too late.
