But Brig. Buba Marwa Banned Roaming In 1996 In Lagos by Cantonese: 4:31pm On Feb 06, 2021
For those who were of age in Lagos before 1996, you can recall how Lagos was quite insecure. Robbers and touts were riding roughshod over the city of Lagos. Daylight robbery was very rampant and touts of the NURTW made life unbearable for Lagosians.

We also witnessed roaming of cows all over Lagos and cows herders destroying properties of people who protested against their wicked behavior.

Such was the terrible state of things in Lagos until Brig. Gen Buba Marwa was made the administrator of Lagos. He quickly swung into action to restore the security of properties and lives of the people of Lagos. With the introduction of “operation sweep” in collaboration with the police, robbers were ruthlessly dealt with. Touting became a risky venture and those who dared were not spared by the ruthless soldiers that formed part of the security team. Touts retuned to Lagos just before and after the 1999 election in Lagos.

Crisis developed between the petroleum people and herdsmen at the Mobil area, marine beach, Apapa, with the herdsmen destroying several trucks. Brig. Marwa banned roaming of cows in Lagos as a whole and ordered the herdsmen to relocate with their cows to Agege were a ranch and abattoir had been made available for them. They resisted and tried to use their contacts and tribal/religious affiliation to convince Brig. Marwa. He refused and stood his ground. With two days to go and seeing soldiers and security men mobilizing to seize their cows, the herders ran away with their cows. That’s how Lagos was freed from that evil.

Taking that as our measure. If Brig. Marwa could do that 25 years ago in Lagos, which was and is still beneficial to all citizens, why is it so difficult for the FG to make herders establish their own ranches? The biggest economies of the world ensure that their agriculture is sustainable. Farming should be allowed to thrive, just as herdsmen must be made to do the appropriate things. Why must politics come to play in all the matters of this country? All the advantages of ranching have been discussed and yet the FG still tells us about grazing routes. Are tarred roads and highways part of grazing routes?

Why must this wickedness be allowed to continue in these modern times?

Those were the days governance was the core mandate of leadership.

Today, ethnic and religious dominance has taken fore seat, while governance has taken backseat.

The greatest undoing of Nigeria is democracy.
