Governors in the North on Tuesday described open grazing by herdsmen as obsolete. It should end, they declared.


This decision was the outcome of, a meeting of Northern Nigeria Governors Forum, held virtually.

The decision is in line with the position of Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who said herders should embrace ranching and stop herding their cows from the North to the South is search of pasture.

The Senate has warned that should the farmers-herders conflict be allowed to fester, it could lead to ethno-religious war and famine.

The North’s governors, according to the meeting communiqué issued by its chairman, Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, have decided to sensitise herdsmen on the need to adopt ranching and other acceptable modern methods.

They said the current system of herding conducted mainly through open grazing is no longer sustainable in view of growing urbanication and population of the country.

“Consequently, the Forum resolved to aggressively sensitise herdsmen”.

They appealed to the Federal Government to support States with grants to directly undertake pilot projects of modern livestock production that will serve as springboard and evidence for breaking resistance to the full implementation of new methods of livestock production.

They also resolved to engage elders and youths in a robust discussion with a view to dousing the tensed security environment in the north.

A four-man Committee to be headed by Lalong was raised to work out the plan to educate herders.

The forum called for restraint from leaders, including those in the South, where passion is high. They also called on citizens of the North to continue to live in peace with all Nigerians, irrespective of their origin and background.

They urged political leaders to differentiate between criminality and social groups and treat criminals as criminals.

“The Forum condemns every form of criminality whether from herders, hunters, or farmers occupying forest reserves illegally”, they added and noted with concern the tension generated by the eviction order issued to herdsmen in some parts of the country.

The North’s governors described the eviction order as heating up the already fragile security atmosphere with threats of reprisals which they are working assiduously to contain.

The meeting said there was the urgent need for the Nigerian Governors Forum to meet and discuss the issue holistically with a view to resolving all areas of misunderstanding and the conflicts arising from these threats and suspicion for the sake of national unity

Open grazing is outdated and hence should be stop. Don't use your business to destroy other person's business.

As for RUGA, the northerners can practice that in the north after all it's their private business.
Secondly, they have a landmass that is two times the entire south.
We don't bug them with our businesses. Hisba is destroying alcohol drinks belonging to southern business owners on daily basis but we are yet to see a Governors forum meeting about that

Openly declaring it obsolete, isn't the solution to the many problems it poses.

What actions have they taken to back up their "obsolete" declaration?

Put legislative backing to the declaration, sensitise them, and create ranch villages/estates/clusters/zones/ for them in the North just as we have industrial clusters.

That will be better.

Most of these cows are owned by the Governors and the rich Hausa/Fulanis men.

It isn't about declaring it, what are dey going to do about it?? They have massive landmass in all their states, how many of dem have allocated areas for ranching? Are they declaring so dat the herders will hear dem or dey are jus declaring to sound politically correct. If dey want to show dey are in support of ending it, let dem outlaw it and create ranches... Anyways I'm waiting for the Chief herdsman of the Federation and his handlers to com out as usual and question the Governors stance

MAD idiots. There will be no Ranch in the South. Put your Ranches in your Sahara desert on your ancestral land. No Ranch will be allowed in Yoruba or Igbo or Niger Delta land.

There is strength in UNITY. Look at what the temporary UNITY among Southerners is achieving within few weeks. Let’s just maintain this temporary UNITY for a little more and we will jointly flush out the blood sucking desert warriors from Southern Nigeria forever.

When the middle belt was complaining they ignore, now that the south has said enough is enough they are talking obsolete. Breaking Nigeria is inevitable

Sometimes I wonder the benefit of Dangote(an hausa man) being the richest man in africa yet his people are suffering more than other regions.
