The Nigerian Coat of Arms
The Coat of Arms of Nigeria was designed and adopted in May 1960 – the same year in which the country gained independence from Britain.

It is not just a symbol with various designs on it, it is one that carries deep importance and meaning to the Nigerian state.

Part of the Coat of Arms logo was incorporated into the logo of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), one of the security agencies in Nigeria.

The Eagle and the shield on which it stands upon are from the Nigerian Coat of Arms.

Meaning of the Nigerian Coat of Arms
The Coat of Arms is made up of several images, and each of these images holds great meaning.

Here is the meaning of the images on the coat of arms:

The Black Shield: Fertile soil of Nigeria
Red Eagle: National strength
Two white horses (on each side): Dignity
The Y-shaped white line: The meeting of Rivers Niger and Benue; the two major rivers in Nigeria.
The Red flowers: Costus spectabilis, Nigeria’s national flower. Represents Nigeria’s beauty.
“Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress”: The Nigerian motto adopted in 1978.

There is no officially recognized designer of the iconic Coat of Arms of Nigeria.
