As we all know, doors are not just meant to provide security, it gives your home design it all-important shape and elegance. Imagine a house without doors. It create that sense of hollowness.

Interior doors can make a world of difference in turning a house into a home. In the same vein, a good front door (exterior) will make a great first impression.

Today, we continue with our discuss on doors.

As you may well be aware, doors are basically divided into two categories: external doors and internal doors.

We will start our discussions on internal doors.

INTERNAL DOORS

Internal Doors comprise both classic, period and contemporary designs depending on your interior design theme. The doors come in all shapes and sizes and style patterns.
Knowing which internal door is right for your property will not only depend on personal preference, but also on the usage that your door will be put through on a daily basis. Some types of wood are far more durable than others while some are more elegant than others.

Next we look at different types of internal doors...

Flush Doors

Flush doors are the simplest of all door designs but when it comes to style, they come in many. They are made is such a way that both sides of the door leave have plain (flat) facings. That is, they have no panels but smooth fronting. The facings are pressed on either side of a core material. By so doing, it gives you and appearance of a solid wooden door.

Generally, we had three (3) main types of flush doors but of recent, here in Lebanon Cedars at least, we have another type making it four:
1. Hollow
2. Stave
3. Solid
4. Piled

Hollow core flush doors feature only the most minimal of support between the door skin and the frame; often in the form of corrugated cardboard in a lattice or honeycomb formation.

Stave core flush doors are the mid-point between solid and hollow. Internally, they are constructed from wooden slats stacked and fixed one on top of the other. The facings and lippings are then attached to the stack of wood to give you the appearance and rigidity of a solid wood door, without the weight or cost.

Solid Core Flush: Here sold wood materials are used as core. It gives you the strength and features of solid doors without the panel.

Piled flush is made when laminated plywoods (otherwise called HDF in Nigeria) are superimposed to form a single solid but plain door. It has all the features of solid doors without the hassle of joining parts.

Panel Doors

Today, we look at panel doors. Please note that we cannot exhaute all the types of door in this write-up but we will look at those that will be very useful to us here so you can have an informed knowledge when choosing doors for your home.

Panel doors are one of the most used doors in most part of the world. Their simple shape can fit almost any interior style.
Despite the fact that we have similar styles of this door, they are available in a wide range of designs, depending on how many panels you want.
Panel doors feature an outer frame with flat, raised or sunken panels to give the design. This type of door is named after how many panels the door has so doors with 2 panels are known as 2-panel doors, those with 4 panels are known as 4-panel doors etc. The panels can be as many as 12 panels.

The panels can be:

horizontal,
vertical,
glazed or
unglazed.

Glazed variations may have a single, multiple, or all of the panels in glass. These are a great option for allowing more natural light to filter from room to room.

French Doors

French doors are made with glass panes that extends from top to base. They have a distinctive look to them. They are a double door system with one door opening to the left, and one to the right. The doors are traditionally glazed, but the glazing can be clear, frosted or obscure.

Internal French door offer:
• A traditional look.
• Increased natural light compared to many single door designs.
• A wider opening than single doors.
• Flexibility to just open one door when needed.

French doors are simple way to take advantage of a larger than average opening. They come in a few different styles, so you can use them to achieve a rustic, grand or sleek and modern look. This level of versatility is a part of the reason that French doors are so popular.

If you have a large door opening that you would like to fit French doors in, but the opening is too big for standard sized doors, then you might want to consider having sidelights fitted on one or both sides of the door. This is a popular option for external doors, but is suitable for internal doors as well.

You can use them for your closet or to separate different spaces in the house. French doors can be painted to suite your design. However, the white ones will give you a sleek and clean look.

French doors can add a dramatic touch to your entrance, kitchen, dinning and living rooms.

Although this type of doors are not common in this part of the world but it can be a great beautiful addition to your home.

1. Almost if not all products have pros and cons. Time will not permit me to list them here and now. I hope to get there in the cause of this write-up though.

However, suffice me to say that the major advantages metal doors have over wooden are security and water resistance. The advantage I believe the wooden doors have over metal is beauty. Moreover, wooden doors have this homey look about them that metal doors do not have.

In terms of cost, wooden door prices are relatively stable with little variation here and there but that cannot be said of metal doors. Metal materials differ and prices are very volatile. Moreover, machines to mold metal here in Nigeria are not readily available. So you will have to rely on archaic welding machine (which might not give you what you want) or importation of already made metal doors.

However, do you know that it is possible to combine the beauty of wooden doors with the security of metal - I mean steel doors!? O yes, it is! We build doors that have steel plate on the inside, covered with beautifully made and finished hardwood. Lebanon Cedars will do that for you!

2. Any of the internal doors listed above and few we'll still add will suffice. If flush doors are well made with good materials, it will last as long as the house itself. Different styles are available to give you your personalized beauty and colour.
The same goes for panel doors. However, the door to be used for your bathroom will depend on the size and design of the bathroom. If it is a small space where water can easily splash on the door and floor, then it is better you use well-finished paneled or glazed doors.

This is necessary because of many in this part of the world don't build their doorways to standard measurements. Bi-fold Doors

These are set of sliding doors attached together by a set of hinges. They are sometimes referred to as folding doors. These doors use mechanisms of sliders and hinges, attached with end pivots on pins. They can be made from materials like wood, metal, glass, or vinyl.

These doors are suitable for small spaces like laundry rooms, bedroom closets, kitchen pantries, and the likes. They are also suitable for rooms that connect to outdoor areas like garden, balcony, and conservatory.

Bi-fold doors create open spaces and allow sunlight and natural ventilation.

External Doors.

We move to external doors quickly.

As we all know, external doors have a vital function of providing security for the house. However, everyone wants his/her external door to look beautiful. While it protects from the elements and potential threats, it should also make a very good impression.

With external doors, however, pleasing aesthetics, a solid build quality and durability are absolutely vital attributes. Like the internal doors discussed above, there are different types and styles of external doors. We will be discussing those that are very relevant to us in this part of the world.

There are 3 main types of external doors namely: Composite, Woodend and uPVC.

Composite External Doors

This is arguably the most expensive external doors. This is because it combines the functions of wood, uPVC, plastic, glass and insulating foam.
It looks somewhat like a wooden door, but with the added flexibility of a uPVC door. The wood creates a very strong and durable body but won’t fade in colour like a standard wooden door would.

In terms of design, you will also find a far greater level of flexibility, with a variety of styles and finishes that simply wouldn't be possible with uPVC. They also require very little door maintenance, which will be a real bonus if you run a busy household.

There are a lot of substandard composite doors in Nigerian market. Hence, ensure you buy from distributors with goodwill.

Wooden External Doors.

Wood is one of the most popular materials for external doors. This has been from time immemorial and its popularity grows by the day. It has stood the text of time. In terms of cost, it sits at the middle of the 3 but there are some wooden external doors that are very pricey.

Unlike the internal doors, wooden external doors are usually made from one or combination of solid hardwoods.

External wooden doors require very little maintenance, although uPVC and aluminium beat it in this category. Wood can expand, contract, crack and fade if left untreated. By treating your door before installation, upkeep will be kept minimal.

It’s easy to change up the look of your wood front door with paint or wood stain. Simply changing the color of your front door can really transform the entryway and improve the overall exterior aesthetic. They also look great on modern and dated properties due to their natural finish.

Bullet Proof Wooden Door

This is an heavy duty type of wooden door. It is built with high quality steel plate overlaid with hardwood materials. What you see externally is beautifully carved and finished wood but underneath is steel plate that are impregnable by bullets.

uPVC Doors

uPVC stands for Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride and is a stable and safe plastic material that has become very common as a building material for exterior doors due to its water resistant and recyclable nature.

The primary reason to opt for a uPVC exterior door is the cost, as they are much cheaper to produce than wooden or composite doors, and these savings will always be passed on to the buyers.

Many people are put off by the look and feel of uPVC. However, what you may not know is that uPVC is a versatile product. It can be fully customized in shape, style, and colour to suit your needs.

Although uPVC isn’t as strong as wood and aluminum, it has a long lifespan and requires very little maintenance. uPVC won’t rot or warp in harsh weather conditions. It rarely gets damaged by the elements too. Unlike wood, you don’t need to treat uPVC. All that a uPVC door needs is a wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove any dirt from its surface.

The major disadvantage I see in uPVC flooding Nigerian market is the substandard key. Most times, the keys get bad within six months of installation and the cost of replacement may sometimes be more than the cost of procuring the door itself.

Haven gone through the major types of internal and external doors. I think it is pertinent we look at door sizes/dimensions.

This aspect of our discussion is very important because many make mistakes of building doorway without putting in mind the size of door they will like to use. This can bring about a lot of headaches when ready made doors are bought for installation. Sometimes, already made doorways are broken to give room for the door. On the other hand, there may be need to add more plastering or blocks if the doorway is bigger than the door.
However, to do away with these headaches of having to break walls or add to walls, in Lebanon Cedars, we build your doors base on the measurement of your doorway.

For internal doors, there are different types of sizes but we can narrow it down to 3: small, standard and large.

The small size in usually 7[b]62mm x 2,100mm (30” x 82.7”);[/b] standard size – 812mm x 2,100mm (32” x 82.7”); Large – 915mm x 2,100mm (36” x 82.7”).

Thickness: If your door is not wider and higher than the above measurement, standard thickness should be 45mm/1 ¾”. However, if your door is wider than 36” and higher than 90”, it should not be less than 2” in thickness.

We must note than some people love to have very high door. However, your internal door should not be higher than 2,400mm/8ft.

I think I should say this: when deciding what size of door you will need, you must put in mind the type of home equipment you will be moving in and out of the room. Large furniture/equipment will require large doorway.
