Referencing is a very important part of project/thesis writing and research reporting. It is basically in two forms. It includes in-text citation and reference listing in the bibliography section. It is that element in writing that helps put our position in perspective, using other established scholars' works.

There are various types of referencing style. These include Harvard, Buffalo, APA, MLA etc. etc. For academic writings, researchers or writers must write using the specified style in order for their reports to be acceptable.

Referencing helps do away with plagiarism especially when it is dutifully and properly done. When a part of a work is quoted verbatim, that is, word for word, the use of the open inverted commas precede and the closing inverted commas is use to end such quote, besides citing its author. However, when such quoted words are quite lengthy, that is, when it is more than four lines, such may be centralised by adjusting the left and right margins of the word document to the central, and as such there will be no need for the inverted commas.

At the bibliography section, only the names of authors that feature in the body of the report should be strictly included, following the pattern of the style of reference in use.

Referencing gives our works the needed authority. It shows that the writer isn't just conjuring from his own limited perspective, but the perspective of other authorities in his field.
