What makes the Mangbetu people unique?

The Mangbetu people are unique because of their high interest in music and art. In the past, they created several artistic objects such as; wooden sculptures, pots, and musical instruments such as; trumpets and harps. The Mangbetu people utilize use clay to make their beautiful pots and jars. We might be wondering what traits a tribe possesses that makes them unique, it is their culture and lifestyle, this is because their culture makes them different from every other tribe in the world, for example, the cultures of the Africans are different from the culture practised in the western world. Some cultures are amazing and admirable while others usually come as a cultural shock to others. The culture of the Mangbetu people will probably come as a surprise to many. The Mangbetu are a group of Africans who live in the Democratic Republic of Congo, precisely in the northeastern part of the Haut-Uele province, they speak a language which is known as Kingbetu, One thing that makes the Mangbetu people unique is the shape of their heads, their skulls appear unusually longer than normal, this might make us wonder why the shapes of their heads are different. Circa 1930, The Mangbetu people considered the stretched heads to be beautiful. In the past the Mangbetu people placed a value on long heads, they felt that it represented class and intelligence. Whenever women give birth to children, they wrapped the heads of their baby's tightly so that the heads of the baby become longer, it is said that women do this to their babies once they clock 1 month. When the Europeans came in the 50s they tried to stop the head elongation procedure, the Mangbetu people also became exposed to the way of life of the Europeans, hence, their head elongation practise started fading away.

Researches have revealed that the head elongation practice has been outlawed by the Belgian government, hence the Mangbetu people have been prohibited from carrying out the head elongation process.

Although most schools of thoughts believe that the head elongation process is harmless, others feel differently about it.
