Why Do Igbo People Sell Shops They Rented From Landlords? by Nobody: 2:09pm On Mar 10, 2021
This thing has been a lingering issue and it is causing problems more than people can imagine.

Igbo people are generally business people and they are very good at it. Wherever an Igbo man or Woman finds himself or herself, the next thing is to rent a shop. This is a very wonderful attitude because it ensures a constant source of income to the renter and also generates income for the state government who collects taxes from them. Now comes the deal breaker.

Some unscrupulous Igbo elements started this idea of shop parking. What they do is to go to a new building or stalls built by the government for renting to business people. Some of these Igbo people will rent as much as 7 shops with no intention of using them.

Their real intention is to "sell' those shops when shop spaces are no longer available thereby hiking the price and making it very difficult for others that want to do real business. E.g.

At computer Village Ikeja, an Igbo man will sell the shop he rented from a Landlord at 150,000 to a fellow Igbo man for as much as 2 million naira. Selling this shop does not imply ownership oo. The person that bought it will now continue to pay rent of 150,000 to the original Landlord.

Due to scarcity of shop space... Some gullible businessmen will go ahead and pay. When they are not able to make it there, they look for another easy prey to sell it to.

Please Nigerians, is this attitude good?

5 Reasons Why Igbos Have Strong Business Acumen

When it comes to doing business in Nigeria, the Igbos of Eastern Nigeria are number one. You cannot compete with them. You find them in every good business from retail to shipping, hotel, hospitality, import and export. They are always there. As in their adrenalin for doing business is out of this world. From the old to the young ones, they blessed with natural business acumen and they have hugely taken advantage of it to create wealth for themselves. In line with this, Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency identifies 5 reasons why Igbo have strong business spirit.

They are will to travel to do business
You should envy the ingenuity and knack for business by the Igbos. Where other Nigerian tribes can never go, you will find the Igbos there. They are on ground fearlessly and painstakingly doing their business. They blend and embrace the culture that you begin to think they are one of them. This is not restricted to the borders of Nigeria.

They don’t struggle with hands on experience
Igbos don’t need or struggle with hands on experience to start a business. They are already set up for success because they haves uncles, aunties, and seniors who are doing business. Hence, they can ease in without stress. They only need to discuss with their significant other that they want to work with them.

They are patient and willing to learn
Despite the fact that they don’t struggle with hands-on experience, they still take time out to learn the tricks of the business they desire to do. You will be shocked that they wait as much as 2 years to learn the business. This is why they are very good entrepreneurs and business men/women.

They love what they do
The Igbos love what they do that is why you find them everywhere. From Yaba to Oyinbo and Ladipo, you find them there. They love what they do and it is also a way for them to survive.

They are natural businessmen and women
You can’t argue with this, the Igbos are blessed with excellent and awesome business men and women.

Do you know what it takes to get a good shop

That is a problem because it makes it hard for other legitimate businesses to get shops.

Government will build shops... One person will rent 8 shops at 150,000 each per annum with no intention of using them. Then he starts selling them at 2 million per unit thereby making over 1300 % of what he rented it. Due to scarcity of shops people will now buy it. The new buyer will now start paying the 150,000 per annum?

AND YOU DON'T SEE A CAPITAL CRIME IN THIS ATTITUDE?

I'm afraid to say, it is very common around the world. Companies were renting up office space in San Francisco, causing a scarcity and ramping up prices, only to now find the space is no more needed due to pandemic induced work from home, and they are now forced to write down their investment.

Shop owners must provide an air tight contract that makes this impossible because the new shop buyer is not contract bound.

There is an implicit value in the shop other than the empty store. Previous owner has added some values that if not harness would be wasted. We are not even talking about physical fixtures like office improvement (tiles, burglary proof, shelves etc) that obviously cannot be removed. Ask yourself, when you need something or need to buy replacement for something you had, where is the first place you remember? Its simple, you remember that place you bought the last one. When you eventually get there, even if the previous owner is no longer there would you still buy the item from that store if they still have it? This is one customer the new owner has retained effortlessly. Same goes for the previous suppliers and other business associates the newer inherits them covertly. Therefore that is the value of the store which is greater than the empty accommodation itself.

For this reason, that practice would always remain attractive because it gives a new startup a head start in an established environment.

Hope you learned something today about how Igbos make it?
