In February last year, the NSA and the immediate past Army Chief, Tukur Buratai, had a major face off when the former took sides with the late Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, to humiliate the NSA.

Mr Buratai, at the time, ordered the withdrawal of top army officers attached to the Office of the NSA without replacements.

A total of 23 army officers serving at the ONSA were posted out without being replaced in two batches on February 4 and 10. Mr Monguno was away from the country at the time of the postings.

The NSA rejected the entire exercise as a charade upon his return and ordered the personnel to disregard Mr Buratai’s directive and remain in place.

Mr Buratai himself ignored the NSA and refused to rescind his decision.

Goodluck Jonathan Keeps Silent on Nigerian Arms Scandal


Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has refused to discuss an arms corruption scandal in which members of his government are accused of misusing billions of dollars earmarked for the fight against Boko Haram.

Other high-profile figures allegedly implicated in the scandal include former Nigerian Defense Minister Bello Haliru Mohammed, who served under Jonathan between 2011 and 2012, and Olisa Metuh, the national publicity secretary of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), of which Jonathan is a member. Nigerian Air Force arms two recently acquired Alpha Jets


The Nigerian Air Force has armed two of the four Alpha Jets it acquired from the United States last year.


Nigerian Air Force (NAF) spokesman Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa late last month said the four Alpha Jets bought from the United States could not be deployed on operations because they could not deliver weapons, thus relegating them to training.

He said the NAF had earlier looked overseas for assistance to get the aircraft reconfigured for combat but foreign companies were asking for $20,000-30,000 to carry out initial assessments of the project, so the NAF decided to form its own team to carry out the work.
“The model worked on the ground, and has since been mounted on the Alpha Jets, and test flown successfully,” he said. “This feat is a major research and development breakthrough for the NAF and the nation as a huge foreign exchange saver, given the project only cost about N400,000 [$2,000].”

Two Alpha Jets were subsequently armed, with photos showing what appeared to be a 68 mm SNEB rocket launcher pod and a 250 kg unguided bomb attached to the aircraft.
