i believe in Bmw than volvo, only the volvo S40 and S80 looks more great. But you hav the choice |

I love the BMW model but in your case i think the Volvo makes more sense. just my 2 cents. |

If chec engine light is on, mae sure you get the codes and google what it means. If it looks like some wiring has been added/removed, or hacked walk away from that car. If engine oil looks very dark black , expect trouble |

Busols757: If you would buy any of these 2 cars and would be left with no money after Purchase, Then Ill advise don't buy any of these 2 cars Look for a good Japanese car, Toyota, Honda or Nissan, Mazda. They are Cheaper to maintain and the parts are everywhere, Road side Mechanic can easily fix them too. BMW and Volvo are Fantastic cars but they need Specialty Mechanics to Handle them, You're a new driver, Go Japanese. Good Luck |

In as much as I won't recommend the Volvo but it is the better of the two in terms of reliability and cost (making reference by brand and not the vehicles in reference). The Volvo is simpler with a rock-solid transmission. Parts are pricey for anything small but it is a better buy. The BMW is a joke. If you are an enthusiast and you work on cars by yourself or a handy person, you can opt for the Bavarian but your money's worth cannot be gotten if your maintenance culture is poor or cannot afford advance repairs to keep it running as new. I've never been in a V40 but it's pretty much something you can work on if you have the tools and the apt for such. I believe both cars have a harsh setup. |

Its Strange that Everyone's Opinion should carry more weight than what U personally feel. I wont recommend any of the 2 cars because this should be your call. Inspired's Comment about looking for a specialised mechanic to fix ur BMW is not the whole truth. Do U take Japanese cars to a Volvo specialist? All cars require specialised mechanics nowadays. Not just BMWs. What Do U feel? Whats important to U? what will piss U off if U make the wrong Choice? What will U feel for the final choice of car in 2years time? This should be Ur Guide. Never neglect Ur Passion. Never. |

Forget cost and buy what you really like. If you love what you drive you will have the motivation to maintain it. Japanese cars are excellent but if you don't like it even repairing a flat tire will seems too expensive for you. No one can gautantee a machine because you never know until it actually happens. So go for what you love. |
