BAE Systems to Supply 9999 Additional APKWS II to Nigeria

BAE Systems is awarded $225 million contract to procure 9,999 additional Lot 7, full-rate production units of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II.

The procurement of the additional APKWS II weapons will upgrade the current 2.75-inch rocket system to a semi-active laser guided precision weapon in support of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and the governments of Nigeria and the Netherlands, the United States Department of Defense said in a statement Wednesday.

Work is expected to be completed in September 2020.

Nigerian Air Force to receive three Aerosonde UAVs worth $25.61 million from U.S. next year

Nigeria would next year receive three Aerosonde Mk 4.7 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from the United States of America.

Expectedly, the UAVs are to be deployed in in the fight against Boko Haram/Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP) fight in Northeast region. It would also be deployed in other parts of Nigeria according to need.

The U.S. Department of Defence (DoD) had last week Tuesday confirmed the contract to supply the UAVs when it announced that AAI Corporation (Textron Systems) had been awarded a $25,610,000 firm-fixed-price contract for the three Aerosonde Mk 4.7 systems, its spares, logistics and training for Nigeria.

The DoD added that “work will be performed in Nigeria, with an estimated completion date of September 30, 2021.”

China has delivered its latest military equipment to Nigeria


7 combat vehicles, consisting of VT-4 main battle tanks, an ST-1 wheeled tank and two types of self-propelled howitzers, was purchased by the Nigeria army. The cargo was delivered to the port of Apapa (Lagos) on April 8.

The Nigerian army made an emergency purchase of heavy weapons to strike at the terrorists Boko Haram (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) in northern Nigeria.

Lieutenant General Lamidi Adesun, head of the Nigeria Army policy and planning department, said Nigeria and NORINCO signed a package deal in 2019. Nigeria has become the first country in the region to own modern tanks and it is fully prepared to use and maintain such types of weapons.

Northern Shipyard manager, Masmawi Ishak said the firm had been picked by Suncraft Private Limited, a Singapore company and the Nigerian Navy, to be the center to build the four patrol boats involving a contract worth RM32 million in February 2020.

The Manta Mk II is a fast patrol boat available in many models and has been conceived for coast patrol, territory defense, marine interception, anti-smuggling, etc.

The Manta ASD is totally built in aluminum and its onboard weight distribution is conceived as to obtain an optimal position of the center of gravity. The main characteristics of this patrol boat is high stability during high speed, good sea keeping, and high maneuverability.

The Suncraft International Manta Mk II is powered by two 1 200 hp diesel engines and can reach a top speed from 45 and 50 knots. The vessel features ballistic protection, can carry a crew of six, and has a range of 250 nautical miles at 35 knots.

French shipyard OCEA launched yesterday a new hydrographic research vessel for the Nigerian Navy. Based on the OCEA OSV 190 SC-WB design, the ship will be known as NSS Lana.

Madam the Nigerian Ambassador to France, a delegation from the Nigerian Navy Headquarters from Abuja and representatives the French administration were present at the ship launching ceremony at the OCEA shipyard in Les Sables d’Olonne.

The Nigerian Navy selected OCEA in 2018 to carry out this contract, following an international call for tenders for the acquisition of a hydrographic research vessel and associated logistical support services.
