What is COVID-19?

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by a strain of coronaviruses. This strain was first discovered in humans in 2019, in Wuhan, China.

How does COVID-19 spread?

Current evidence suggests that the main way the virus spreads is by respiratory droplets. These droplets can be shared amongst people who are in close contact with each other. The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe heavily.

Aerosol transmission can occur in specific settings, particularly indoors, crowded areas and inadequately ventilated spaces. When an infected person(s) spend long periods of time with others, in places such as restaurants, fitness classes, nightclubs, offices and/or places of worship, the chances of contracting the virus are higher.

The virus may also spread after infected people cough on, or touch surfaces, or objects, such as tables, doorknobs, and handrails. Other people may become infected by touching these contaminated surfaces, then touching their eyes, noses, or mouths without having cleaned their hands first.

How long does it take for people to get sick after they are exposed to COVID-19 virus?

Once a person has been exposed to the virus, they usually develop symptoms within 1 - 14 days (average of 5-7days). Common symptoms include fever, cough, tiredness, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, headache, general body pain/weakness and diarrhoea.
Some people are infected and never develop symptoms (They are called ‘asymptomatic’), but these people can still spread the virus to others around them in close contact.

Is COVID-19 a death sentence?

No, COVID-19 is not a death sentence once the proper measures are taken to manage the condition.
Preventing yourself from contracting it to begin with, is the paramount management of this disease.
However, once it's contracted, follow the procedures as outlined by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and World Health Organisation.
