With the result of the recent NASS election where ACN clears majority of the south west House of representaive seats and the loss of the incubent speaker (Dimeji Bankle), Who now becomes speaker? From my fact (correct me if am wrong) the few seats won by the PDP in the south west, are first timers. We the yoruba (south west) would not want to lose any vital position already zone to us by the PDP arangement. Expect if they will zone it by giving us the senate president and zoning the Speaker to East. Which mean Davis Mark will have to step down.

The Yourbas are the terrific losers in this dispensation.
They can never get senate president.
The speakership may not go to them as well.

The reason the only senator elect from Yoruba land is a back-bencher.
The only ranking senator from from Yoruba land is Ganiyu Solomon; he was in SDenate for four years, I have never seen him raise his hand on the floor.
At best, he will be the leader of minority.

The PDP senator from Oyo can at best be senate leader. But who will give senate leader to a back-bencher?

Is there any law that says a first timer cannot be speaker?

[The Yourbas are the terrific losers in this dispensation.]
I disagree with you on this one. Not because the yorubas decide to have a one voice or show their unity in voting for one particular party that makes them losers. What is happening is a revolution for change.
The issue is that if BABA still believes that there is Zoning in PDP, then its our (yoruba's) birth right for now to own the Speaker.

@LAGOSBOY: the rules of the house states first timer cannot be speaker

Zoning applied to PDP members. If your zone did not have a representation, the balancing will be to give it to those who have the represntation, However, many will be vice-chairman of committees at best.

Zoning in PDP is dead. The positions in the NASS shall be determined by political support to the party through the elected number of representatives as well as political horse trade. South west geopolitical zone should look up to ACN which will constitute the opposition party for relevant office in NASS. This is a new NASS and all positions are contestable. David Mark is likely will not be the Senate President when the new NASS convenes.

When did they make this rule because in 1999 Enwerem and Salisu Buhari were first timers so as everyone else in the house. Can they legally make this rule if there is no consitutional requirment for such, without ammending the consitituion of Nigeria?

Who killed zoning?
Yorubas lost out. Simple. Even the opposition in the senate will be weak.

Lost out from what?
Yorubas elected those they trusted and have faith in. This is most important.

Yoruba lost out? Dont think so.

1) they voted a party of their choice
2) unlike perhaps the Igbos & minority groups, it is much more difficult for Yorubas to be ignored. In Nigeria's political hierrachy, they are now firmly no.2
3) PDP will want to win back the Yorubas for future elections - 'punishing' them for not voting PDP will only make the latter's situation worse in future elections. Yorubas will remember! Igbos and others are more likely to give the PDP a 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc chance. Yorubas will not.

I see Yorubas remaining very visible in the political hierrachy, though I dont see what advantage/benefit it brings to a group to have 'one of theirs' in a high ranking political position. Most Nigerians are in positions to line their Swiss pockets, as oposed to bringing development to their constituency/region.

From my own calculations, SARAKI JNR will become the Senate President.
That was his deal with GEJ before he agreed to support him. But with the numerous deals GEJ seems to be cutting here and there, If he wins (God forbid) then too many hands will decide how the food is cooked
Re: Who Becomes Speaker Now by enyojo(f): 6:04pm On Apr 14, 2011
As for the speaker, a yoruba must not be Speaker. A yoruba can be Senate President.
Again, if a yoruba becomes Senate President, where do you leave the Igbos in all these?
After all, they have even betrayed themselves by saying 'Ebele' is from their side.

lets wait till next month to see who is the real looser! Yorubas or Igbos. As coming from Kogi, I no send them all
Re: Who Becomes Speaker Now by Dede1(m): 7:09pm On Apr 14, 2011
Nigerians talk about democracy and still do not know how the system of government works. It is about majority and political support. Also, it is winner takes-all atmosphere. In 1999 general election, the SW was not involved in the making of the majority party in NASS and rightfully had no say about who became either Senate president or Speaker of the house. It could be the repeat of 1999 if the SW struck out again this time around. There is no way on earth ACN will produce either senate president, house speaker, deputy senate or deputy speaker.

The atmosphere in NASS will be turned into horse trade franzy the moment the elections are over. Most of  the elected members, especially from the minority parties, will attempt to carve political relevance for them selves by seeking favor from the majority party.
