Almost everyone in Nigeria with access to the internet has some sort of formal education, but spending a little time browsing through social media channels and forums will make you question if some of these people immerge straight from the bush.

It has become a norm for people to quickly result to insult and abuse when a person raises an issue contrasting to their opinions. People with uncouth behaviours are littered all over the internet. Amazing thing is, these are mostly young people (a large number of them are either in higher institutions or with secondary education).

I believe this issue is as a result of bad parenting and a failed educational system. Parents don't teach their children to treat people with respect, and the schools fills our heads with Chemistry, Physics and Math, while they ignore human relations. The religious system has a share of the blame too.

A young lady who made front page on NL created a thread about a guy making threats about her life and her not knowing what to do. Majority of the commenters resulted to abusing her instead of giving advice.
Empathy has been thrown out the window....quite pathetic.

I pity anybody who will come to Nairaland to seek for advice, they would finish the person kpata-kpata. cheesy Some would even pour their frustrations and anger towards Nigeria on you.

I would blame parenting as the sole cause of this decline in moral standards. What a child sees his parents do can only be reciprocated especially when thing like insults and abusive language are the major things being said at home.

The older people are full of bitterness towards themselves and the younger generation. Envy, gossip, PHD syndrome.

Act like you are in need or seek assistance(not money) from any older neighbor or street person. That will give you an opportunity to hear what he thinks about you.

You will be met with venom, malice, frustration, like you stole his future or destiny.

Just try it.

People have become so hopeless in the country that the only way they think they can survive, is by destroying their fellow human beings or their property.
