AE-FUNAI to establish multi-disciplinary Lab
The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientist of Nigeria (AMLSN), Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State Chapter, has commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sunday Elom for his exemplary leadership and commitment to the welfare of staff of the University.

A senior member of the association, Very Rev. Prof. Anthony Ezimah, made the commendation recently when the association paid a courtesy call to Prof. Elom to celebrate his emergence as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor of the University.

‘’We are here today to celebrate and thank God for finding you worthy to be selected by the Federal Government of Nigeria as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor of AE-FUNAI

“We have the confidence that you are the best person fitted for this assignment’’ he said, adding “We wish you great success and assure you of our total loyalty and support to take this University to a greater height.”

Prof. Ezimah further thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the vision statement he shared during the inaugural Senate, especially in his promise to start Medical Laboratory Science discipline in the university, adding that the programme when started would lead to proper research and investigation in the Teaching Hospital and also bridge the gap between Medicine and other medical programmes.



Also speaking at the event, Prof. Moses Alo, of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences highlighted some of the basic requirements for establishing Medical Laboratory Science and Nursing in the University, noting that AE-FUNAI would be the 3rd Federal University in South East zone to have a Medical Laboratory Science Programme after UNN and UNIZIK. He noted that enough manpower would also be required and pleaded for management to look into the staff welfare as regards proper placement of medical laboratory scientists already working in the University.

While making his submission, the President of the association, Scientist Cletus Nwabugwu, commended Prof. Elom for making the University Medical Centre his top priority since he assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor, stressing the need for management to look towards equipping the Laboratory Unit of the Centre to enable it embark on some basic medical investigations to reduce the amount of time and money staff and students spend in accessing same at the teaching hospital located in Abakaliki, adding that it would also generate revenue for the University.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elom while responding to a number of requests by the association, thanked the team for pledging their loyalty to his administration, noting that management has always been workers-friendly, especially as it concerns staff placement. He however, advised the association to write officially to management on the proper placement of their members, promising that management would look into their requests dispassionately.

“Thank you for pledging your loyalty to my administration. I welcome you on board as we take AE-FUNAI to the next level.”

He further stated that a committee would be set to work-out the modalities for the setting up of a multi-disciplinary laboratory in the University, which according to him, would help in attracting research grants to the institution.

Prof. Elom also assured them of his total commitment towards establishing paramedical programmes in the University such as Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy and others.
