Health Workers' Unfriendly Attitude Responsible For why many of us travel abroad to seek treatment ― Buhari

Buhari, said this in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, at the official commissioning of an International Conference Centre and Telemedicine hall and six other projects at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday attributed the unfriendly attitude of health workers in the country to an increase in medical tourism and not necessarily the infrastructural deficit of the hospitals

He emphasised the need for continuous training and retraining of health workers to deliver Nigerians quality health care services.

The President, who spoke through the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said, "We still get all too often for comfort, disconcerting reports of not friendly attitudes of staff to patients, reports of unhygienic and housekeeping standards that leaves something to be desired even in the presence of sophisticated equipments that have all been provided for by the federal government and well-qualified doctors".

"Such simple failings like these are more frequently responsible for the loss of confidence of the end-users in our health system than even the lack of equipment.

"They are the triggers for the distrust that have lead us to go on medical tourism", he said.

"We have a lot of work to do in that area. I want to believe that the managers of our hospitals, after such laudable, fantastic infrastructure investment, will now begin to pay attention, not only to improving staff harmony and welfare but to retraining health caregivers for better professionalism that deliver service in a productive and courteous atmosphere based on the lessons we learnt from our traditional African hospitality".

Actually, PMB has a point. Health workers too can do with some psychological evaluation and counselling support too. Not every problem is caused by government. The most offensive of the problem in the Nigerian health care is the one caused by late Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti who removed the administration of healthcare from professional managers and gave members of his professional group. Till now, things that started falling apart then has sent more talents out of Nigerian public health system than brain drain and more medicine graduates have ended up into hospital and public politics than actual life saving duty. Most of the experienced hands are in one political office or the other while the few left have little time to mentor and train. Government must reverse what Prof. Olikoye started in 1985 before the glorious days of out health sector can return. The taxpayers are not getting positive return on investment in training Nigerian medical doctors as they are are more likely to end up in politics than long life practice. The President-Maj.Gen.Buhari(retd.) on Friday said....“Nigerians have suffered so much going abroad for medical treatment. This is not good for us & it must stop because we can’t afford it again" The President, who himself had travelled to the United Kingdom for treatment on several occasions."

Blame the helpless healthcare workers and them blame Nigerians for his poor governance that led to poor healthcare services. This is the president of a country who violated his government promise to avoid medical tourism and extravagant wastage of meagre resources.
talking. The idiocy of this man is legendary.

Even the leadership of this now moribund nation who had the best of life(FG/Foreign scholarships, govt grants, executive privileges, etc) back then, are still going abroad to seek healthcare after more than 60years of independence because of greed, corruption & sheer wicked.

What is the president doing by seeking healthcare in London hospitals despite promising not to indulge in such profligacy prior to coming to power while Aso Rock Clinic, National Hospital-Abuja and other healthcare institutions in Nigeria are death slabs? Garki hospital without basic radiologic scanning machine while FMCs are now suffering from necessary legislative back-bone to function optimally.

Aisha Buhari always goes to "rest" in London/Dubai while Yusuf was hospitalized in a German hospital.Mamman Daura has been hospitalized in a UK hospital for some time now.All of them @ whose expense? You know the answer.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians with health challenges are allowed to die preventable deaths because of the failure of govt. What about bastardized economy/educational system(their wards school outside so our ivory towers can grow Iroko trees if they want)? Security they cant provide neither is there food security.

Yet, here back home is an oppressive and repressive govt that brook no constructive criticism or opposition to it evil policies.A president is the no-1 image of his nation, but if the citizens have no trust in their govt, you have no right to blame them.

What leads to the unfriendly attitude of health workers many times results from stress due to being overlaboured. Our health workers are not meant to be exposed to such long period of work daily and at the end of the day little pay for their services.

The hospitals are not well equipped by the government. The CMD and his cohorts will still have to short change the hospitals. At the end of the day, no PPE, shortage of staff and delay in salary and allowance payment.

Definitely these will have impact on their state of mind and the weak, patients, will be the ones to bear the impact and the receiving end of the aggression

See the fool. What about the attitude of the past and present ministers of health towards discouraging productivity among the hardworking healthcare workers?

Prof.Isaac Adewole(former time health minister) derogatorily told doctors who spent 6-8yrs training that they can go into farming or tailoring while Ngige was telling doctors to emigrate while he knows the healthcare in Nigeria is terribly understaffed. The current minister of health once told the world that he does not know how much doctors are being paid as hazard allowance.

All them are well educated people who became educated illiterates because of politics.Tell me, are these the kinds of people you will want to share nationality with?

Is that why all politicians and their relatives travel abroad for medical tourism? Is that why you spent over5 months abroad in a year? Which doctor or nurse was unfriendly to Aisha and Bello Yeye's wife before they went to Dubai for neck pain and botox injection respectively? Why is their unfriendly attitude only affecting the rich folks? God dey o, remember that undecided

So if that is the case, what should you do as the government? Not act by setting high standards and making sure they are adhered to? Or you will rather prefer to sit back and follow the ordinary man on the streets to whine and complain as you pray to God for solutions?? Are you not the government? Are you not the one who killed and bribed and rigged to get to power? What is federal power for, if you can't solve such little problems? What's so rocket science about making policies and enforcing those policies? How can a government look so bemused in the face of a problem it can so easily solve by being effective with it's administrative abilities? Generational incompetence on display if you ask me..

Even ear check he refuse to have in the #3B budget Aso Rock clinic in 2016-17 but choose to go to a cosy London hospital where his health tourism, retinue of aides and the parked the Presidential jet accumulated a huge financial burden for the Nigerian state during 90days @ Stansted's airport. The costs incurred, Lai Mohammed said Nigerians are not entitled to know. This is a public servant for that matter

Obviously you don't see beyond your resentment of PMB. Is it PMB that made even a sitting President to die in a foreign hospital and even the wife of Pa Obasanjo to die overseas? When you see government build large 'world-class infrastructures ' but the working environment is so toxic for you because of inter-professional rivalry and politics, you will rather leave the country than allow the system stifle your mental well-being and progress. Imagine a medical doctor slapping a nurse or everywhere you turn in the health care system, it is a medical doctor appointing another medical doctor into one political office or the other. It got to a point even NAFDAC and the Apex professional nursing council were occupied by medical doctors dashed political office in the bazaar. I know a very brilliant radiologist the taxpayers spent a lot to train and as soon as he returned from overseas the FG sent him, spent some few years in LUTH, he was given a political appointment and that was it! He is not practicing now yet we complain we don't have enough radiologists. The medical doctors in Nigeria is eating and destroying itself and will keep doing so until government rein them in especially the loss of talents to politics in hospital and in the public sphere. Please just calculate how many doctors are holding political offices in Nigeria. It is scandalous for a country with such low medical doctor to citizen ratio. This bazaar of political appointment for experienced medical doctor is killing the profession and Nigeria's health sectot.Visit www.freestiffsng.com for latest freestuffs

Oga you have no excuse to defend the failed and useless president on this one.It because of people like you that Buhari has continued to insult the sensibility of all Nigerians because you defend every shitty thing he does.

So the inter-healthcare workers rivalry is to be blame for the violation of his promise? So Doctor vs JOHESU fight started today? Failure of the critical healthcare sector have subjected Nigerians to avoidable morbidity and mortality but Buhari have repeatedly visited London hospitals, His son Yusuf was flown abroad for care of head injury while his daughter went outside to give birth to her baby right?

What about Buhari himself that proscribed the NMA under the them Dr.Isaac Adewole(Former minister of health) in 1985 during his tyrannical reign? I am even surprise same Adewole accept to serve when the tyrant asked him to come and chop.

The military government under Buhari preceded the decision of Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti in 1985. That sad policy change by Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti occured under Gen. Babangida.
Before then, if we train 100 doctors, you are less likely to have less than 25 who are highly experienced end up in politics but now, if you train 100 and spend billions educating them to experienced level , almost all of these 100 will end up in one political office or the other. The young medical doctors are victims of that policy Prof Olikoye Ransome-Kuti introduced in 1985.
