Eagles used to play their home games in Lagos back then. What is it like?

Lagos fans loved us like hell, but they didn’t care who we were facing because we must perform. Has it ever occurred to people that how was it that we never lost in Lagos? The only game that we can say we lost was the controversial one that we lost by penalties at the 2000 AFCON final where the ball crossed the line but the referee didn’t allow it. Lagos fans will make you play at your best, we didn’t lose that game but we needed a police escort to leave the stadium. Even one of my colleagues almost lost his life that day.

If Nigeria wants to succeed and get back to the top in the world, Lagos has to become again the number one venue for national team games. Lagos has about 20 million people and the market is there. For you to succeed as a player, you need positive pressure and that is what Lagos gives you, but very few people can stand it. I had a colleague during my time who almost pee before we got on to the pitch because of pressure. We’ve had opponents who came to play against us in Lagos and when they came out for warm up they already lost before they went back to dress up because of the atmosphere. It was like a gladiator atmosphere and of course if your team is not solid enough you will be worried. If you can face Lagos fans and do well, there is nowhere in the world that you will play and be worried.
