Gombe State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Godfery Miri, who was on an inspection tour of the state during the Presidential election held on Saturday, escaped death when he was attacked by a group of irate youths in Bajoga town, in Funakaye Local Government Area of the state.

Miri said that he had stopped over to check the election proceedings when he noticed a large number of underage at a polling centre and in an attempt to investigate the gathering from the party agents and INEC Electoral Officer around, the infuriated teenagers attacked him with clubs, stones and sticks, in the process smashing the windscreen of his official car with registration number FG 636 VOI.

Similarly, members of the Correspondents Chapel of the Gombe State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, as well as the AIT crew and The Guardian reporters, were also attacked when they mistakenly ran into the crisis on their way from Nafada. The rear windscreen of their bus was smashed while they fled the town.

When the Correspondent met with the INEC REC, he confirmed that he was attacked for daring to stop under-age voting in two polling units, which is against the 2011 Electoral Act and the Constitution of Nigeria.
