21 was inspired by the American country and Southern blues music she had been introduced to during the North American leg of her 2008–09 tour An Evening with Adele. The songs on Adele's intensely autobiographical album are structured in a chronological order that correlates to the spectrum of feelings she felt during the break-up, moving from themes of rage and bitterness to loneliness, heartbreak and remorse, and eventually acceptance.

"Rolling in the Deep," a "dark, bluesy, gospel, disco tune" penned as a "Bleep you" to her ex-lover after his disparaging comments that she was fragile and that her life without him would be "boring, sad, and garbage," in the singer's own words.

The singer's tongue-in-cheek retort to the hurtful speculation about her breakup, "Rumour Has It," was directed at her own friends for their role in spreading the rumors. The percussion-driven song is based on girl-group harmonies, piano chords, banging kick drum, and handclaps, and sees the singer "channeling a '40s, piano-vixen lounge singer," fusing elements of doo-wop and Tin Pan Alley blues.

"Don't You Know," co-written by Adele and Dan Wilson and produced by Rick Rubin, marks a change in the album's theme from rage and defensiveness to contemplation and heartbreak.
