No fewer than ten people have been killed, while cars, houses and other valuables were destroyed in the aftermath of the presidential election in different parts of Bauchi State.

Mayhem erupted when irate youths, believed to be supporters of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) unleashed terror on innocent people in the name of protecting votes cast in favour of the party.

In Azare, headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area, the youths set ablaze the house of the Bauchi State Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ibrahim Yaro-Yaro, as well as the house of the Deputy National Secretary of the party, Dr. Musa Babayo. Other property belonging to PDP members were also torched.

Witnesses said the youths were protesting what they described as insufficient ballot papers made available to the polling units during the conduct of the election; a claim the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied. The commission described the action of the youths as impatience as enough ballot papers were made available for the area.

In Alkaleri area, the youths unleashed terror on people during the conduct of the election torching buildings and cars, while the Chairman of Kirfi Local Government Council, Ibrahim Galadima, and that of Bauchi LGC, Sabo Abdullahi Mohammed, were molested and their vehicles burnt down.

In Misau, reports have it the family house of the Secretary to State Government (SSG), Ibrahim Ahmed Dandija, was torched by the youths while a corps member, who was an electoral official in one of the polling centre, was beaten and is now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Bauchi.

In Bauchi capital, the campaign office of Governor Isa Yuguda, located on Ran Road, was also razed, while several vehicles, belonging to PDP agents, were also torched by the irate youths. In Wuntin-Dada and Guru areas of Bauchi metropolis, three people were killed by the rampaging youths because the PDP won in some of the polling units located there

Reacting, the state police command has deployed anti-riot police officers to strategic locations in Bauchi metropolis to maintain peace. Soldiers were also seen in selected areas of the city.

Unconfirmed reports state that some of the youths have been arrested by the police. Efforts to contact the state’s Commissioner of Police, John Abakasanga, or the spokesperson, Mohammad Barau, were unsuccessful as calls made to their mobile phones were not answered as at press time.

Meanwhile, the presidential election results for the state, as announced by the collation officer, indicated that there are a total number of 2,352,092 registered voters in the state; out of which a total of 1,650,459 voters are valid, while 40,365 votes rejected for various reasons.
