Hi everyone it has come to my notice that we in Nigeria follow a particular trend when it comes to buying cars a sort of keep up with the Joneses and income inequality as a factor comes to play when the average nigerian wants to buy a car.

from my statistics(independent survey/observation)2005-20011
this following cars have made a popular demand to the Nigerian shore

2003-TILL DATE -1997 toyota camry and 1998-2002 honda accord and the 2000 nissan pathfinder

2005 to 2007-the 1997-2002 Honda accord Cr-v and also the toyota Rav-4

2007-2008-the 2003-2005 honda accord (E.O.D)

2008-2010-the 2001-2007 toyota highlander now seems to be making waves round nigeria
i really wonder why people are in love with the higlander  undecided

2010-2011-the 2007 camry and the 2006-2007 honda accord are now trending

from this data the average nigerian or middle class focuses on cars between to gaps
is he/she is on the high side a budget of 1.8million-2.4 is average

then on the lowside 1.3million-1.5million
this is just an observation.lets have  your won views and what you think

I really don't see any trend, its been the same for a long time just newer models.

Its Japanese(Honda and Toyota) compact, mid-size, CUV,and SUV.

Nissan, Subaru and Mitsubishi were never popular but they offer comparable product at much lower price.

Those that fell out of favor due to cost of ownership and reliability issues are Civic, 4Runner, Sequioa, and Landcruiser

Here is a post from a couple of years back on the most popular suv on nairaland now, it was the first pilot offered for sale.

Notice no offer was made and Vipermans post#7(comparing to passport) because it was a new model then.

Now I will pick a Ford Edge over a Murano, and Explorer over Pilot

For real, you mean Ibadan was a victim of sabotage shocked By whom shocked I have seen some picture of the city, I love it, though the buildings could do with a bit of facelift, it is generally a clean and peaceful city, I would not mind living there or retiring to live there.

The people i know who live there can be quite arrogant though, always claiming it has a far better social life than Lagos and would trounce lagos outta the water on all count, arrant nonsense, Lagos is it, all others are counterfeit tongue

Why effrything go dey shake when I nor be condemned good, effrything stand well well my dear tongue

I agree with the OP's view, Nigerians have this herd mentality thing that makes us set in our ways. Its like the obsesssion with the is it 1975 Mack truck too undecided

Just like you, I was once a fan of the Cherokee Jeep and loved the grill sooo much, but was talked out of buying it angry Now if I had discovered NL then and you, i have no doubt I would have bought it, but i did not find a single soul to encourage me, twas just tales of woe and gloom and doom sad

@Sultaan if you notice right now the Toyota higlander a car that came out since 2001 (01-07 i don't see any modification undecided) is now a hot cake in Nigeria even here on nairaland observe the trend in adverts and pre orders

It less expensive than the 4runner and it has a car ride.

The really funny thing is they pay soo much for these economy mid-size cars they'll ignore a Lexus over a Toyota.

The trend will still remain to be Camry, and Accords. Future trend will add the Hyundai Sonata and Kia to the ranks.
American car won't make it becos most come in V6. The only American car that might make it are the Fusion and Focus 4cylm aybe the Malibu or Cruz but that will take about 3 years
