I heard from a very reliable source that if you have an issue with a northerner particularly hausa or fulani and drag him to the police station to settle the matter, that the police will arrest you and freed the northerner though he is guilty.

And this has been going on in onitsha for a very long time now...
Can someone who lives around there confirm this news!

Absolutely not true in Onitsha. It could be a different ball game in Kano or Kaduna. In addition, it is not the job of the police to determine if the accused is guilty or not.

Alafin of oyo is One of the Highest Monarch in yorubaland
A whole Monarh was kidnapped by fulanis, Oba Alaafin and others Obas at that meeting donated money and foods demanded by the fulanis to secure release of the monarch, after which they set up vigilantes to arrest the fulani abductors and took them to the police, But before they could get home from the station All the fulanis were released unconditionally
