He stated this on Thursday at the presentation of “The Making of The Nigerian Flagship: A Story of The Guardian,” a book by The Guardian newspaper.

Osinbajo, who expressed concern about the proliferation of fake news, urged journalists to rise as professionals to challenge this.

“It is said that journalism is the first rough draft of history. It is true that reportage shapes the perception and understanding of events,” he said.

“It shapes memories and can influence behaviour for good or for ill. There are arguably no bigger influencers than those who report and interpret the world to us. This is considerable power and it comes with responsibility.

“About four decades ago, The Guardian set new standards that forever transformed the practice of journalism. Today, a more complex media and information landscape require a corps of professionals to set new standards and raise the quality of the fare on offer.

“The pioneers of The Guardian understood that journalism operates in a social context and cannot be value-neutral. This same cognitive commitment is incumbent upon all media practitioners today. We are at a time in our national odyssey in which retailers of discord and merchants of strife are working assiduously against our collective potential as a people.

“Creating commonality of purpose in ethnically and culturally diverse societies is challenging the world over. However, nation-building is not the sole preserve of politicians and governments; in fact, it is just as much a task for civil society of which the press is an important member.

“It is true that freedom of expression is enshrined in our constitution, but we all agree that society, progress, and order depend upon the responsible exercise of freedom, otherwise, the end result will be anarchy.

“As we struggle to build our nation with the bricks of mutuality, plurality, and tolerance, I would suggest that those of us that stand as gatekeepers in the fourth estate must demonstrate a greater awareness of the sensibilities and sensitivities of our society.”

The vice-president also hailed The Guardian as a newspaper that has, over the years, maintained its standard of principle and objectivity.

There are many misleading news outfits in Nigeria. The rate at which they mislead Nigerians who they know will not read the context of their news is alarming they are proud of it.

Can you imagine an editor working his energy off a news and putting a misleading headline at the end of his work? They don't encourage people to clock on their news with their misleading headline. It's pathetic.

Are you proud of wasted energy. Because It is a wasted energy if Nigerians only read your headline and not your news. News outfit should be worried

The Guardian is no longer just a newspaper house, but a public institution – one that has served as an exemplar and a model for generations of media practitioners who replicate its ethos and standards in different ways.

I agree with the Vice President on this but with the media practitioners we dealing with now, are not ready for pure journalism, all they know is to push out mischievous news just to draw traffic on their web or social media handles. I hope they follow this words of wisdom from the Vice President.

There must be commensurate sanction for news that a found not to be true. Government should stop treating such with kid gloves. Rwanda genocide was started by misinformation. Mobile Power Solution (MPS) guarantees you power on the go, where and when you need it. Our brand new MPS 2. 0 can power your laptop for between ten to twenty four hours, a dc fan for 24 hours, easily recharge by Solar, Grid electricity or Power generating set within 4 hours.

I for like call this man useless and unwise but, at the same time, virtually all VPs before him lived in the president's shadow. Same with most deputy governors, so I go just keep shut.

Re: Osinbajo: Journalists Must Be Sensitive In Their Reporting by Nobody: 6:45am On Apr 09, 2021
I beg ur pardon mr vice president Journalism shouldn't be sensitive to anything, they are to report their stories in its original state without mincing words or trying to be sympathetic with the truth, journalism is about being independent, fair, blunt, and professional in delivering reports to the public, journalism is the weapon of the citizens to check the excesses of government and not a tool to serve government interests! There's no TV station or newspaper in Nigeria that's truly independent that's why we av all this fake news and censored news spreading around, stifling people of their rights to know what the govt is doing

Please they should report the truth. Period.

The problem is not insensitivity in reportage, but the appalling events happening in our dear country.

Simply reporting them as they happened without glossing over details (e.g "farmer-herder 'clashes'" instead of "massacre of farmers by Fulani herders") will be far worse that what we are currently hearing.

Let the journalists drop the news as it is for 6 months and let's see if Nigeria will take it.

Lots of terrible things are happening all over.
