The REAL Reason There Is Unemployment In Nigeria = YOU

When you want a wristwatch, you want the one made in Switzerland or London.

If you hear it was made in Nnewi, you will not buy.

So why will there be numerous watch making factories employing thousands of youths?

Impossible.

If you want sportswear, you demand Adidas, Nike or Puma.

If you are offered something by a local sportswear brand in Akwa Ibom, you will say no.

So why will there be multiple indigenous sportswear manufacturers employing thousands of youths?

Impossible.

When you want a car, you want the one made in Germany, or Japan, or Italy, or USA, or UK.

If you hear it was made in Nnewi by Innoson, you wil not buy.

So why will there be multiple local car manufacturing companies employing youths?

Impossible.

When you want to wear shoes, you want the ones made in Italy.

Antonio Meccariello, Santoni, Bontoni, Armani, Gucci, etc

If you hear it was made in Aba, or Onitsha, you will pick race.

So why will there be multiple shoemaking factories employing thousands of youths everywhere?

Impossible.

If you want a handbag, you look for Fendi, Gucci, Prada, Valentino, and other foreign brands.

If you hear it was made in Ogbomosho, you will slap the person offering you the bag.

So why will there be multiple hand bag making factories employing thousands of youths everywhere?

Impossible.

You want to shack, you will demand Hennesey, Baileys, Jack Daniels. Vodka. Gin and Tonic.

If somebody offers you prime, locally brewed Kai kai or Ogogoro, you will pour it in their face, for the gross insult to your person, that they should dare suggest that you drink such a 'primitive' liquor.

So why will there be multiple hard liquor making factories employing thousands of youths everywhere?

Impossible.

If you want a computer, you want Hewlett Packard, or IBM, or Apple Mac.

If somebody suggests you buy one from local manufacturers like Zinox, you will ask him if he's mad.

So why will there be multiple computer-building factories across the nation employing thousands of youths?

Impossible.

When you want to go on vacation, you head for Dubai, or London, or New York, or Paris.

If somebody suggests you go to Obudu Resort in Cross Rivers State, you will look them up and down and kiss your teeth.

So why will there be multiple resorts everywhere employing thousands of youths everywhere?

Impossible.

The reason there is unemployment in Nigeria is not Buhari, is not the federal government, is not the state governments, is not politicians.

It is YOU.

If you look around, those local industries/products which WE are willing to patronise, ARE ALL THRIVING, and employ thousands, and millions of Nigerians:

These are:

Cement
Building materials
Fast food/Eateries
Music
Film
Beer
Home grown food products like cassava, tomatoes, onions, tatashe etc.

The industries which are NOT thriving, are the industries in which we prefer FOREIGN MADE over local.

Those industries are listed in the first post.

So the truth is, the MORE and wider range of locally made goods WE are willing to patronise, the more production of such goods will ensue, and the more employment will be generated.

Well, in all fairness to OP, before an industry can thrive it needs patronage. More like if you take 100k and commit to a new business, before you can make a profit you need patronage of a few Nigerians.

Before you can make a killing in that business, you need a much larger customer base first.

How many people patronizing foreign goods? Majority of nigerians are living below poverty line.
They cannot even afford local goods.
I think you should blame the politicians, corrupt civil servants and business moguls who patronize foreign goods instead of locally produced items.

There are tens of millions of ordinary Nigerians who buy Italian shoes and shun locally made shoes.

In fact, Aba shoe manufacturers often label their shoes 'Made in Italy', just to get Nigerians to buy them.

Local sportswear manufacturers label their clothes 'Nike', 'Adidas', all fake names, just to attract custom from Nigerian buyers.

That shows you how debased our mentality is as a people.

It is an anti-industrialisation, pro-import mentality.

This is NOT about politicians alone.

Millions of ordinary Nigerians buy foreign-made cars, instead of local brands like Innoson or Nord, not just ''business moguls'', and ''corrupt politicians''.

We ALL are responsible for this.

Stop dodging from the responsibility of many ordinary Nigerians for our predicament.

We need a MINDSET revolution in this country.

And we don't need to wait for ''our leaders'', to effect that.

Politicians and leaders should by examples. In addition , can local producers can match local demands? Rice is a case study.
If local items are easily available, most people would buy them. Did anybody force you to buy dangote products-sugar, indomie, cement etc?

Get real.

Are you saying that the the reason Nigerians buy Italian shoes is because local shoe manufacturers cannot meet local demand for shoes?

Are you serious?

Go and ask Aba shoe manufacturers if they have a problem meeting local demand for shoes.

They will tell you that have EXCESS CAPACITY which they cannot use, because of low patronage.

A simple mindset change among Nigerians can create WHOLE NEW INDUSTRIES virtually overnight.

Take Jeans for instance.

On any given day, not less than 30 million Nigerians are wearing a pair of Jeans.

The Jeans are all imported. Foreign material.

Now imagine for a second that Jeans went OUT OF FASHION in Nigeria, and some traditional tie and dye blue material trousers became commonly sought, due to its lighter material, and local origin.

Oh wait a minute.. All of a sudden, a whole new industry is born. Millions of young Nigerians now crazily seek these locally made tie and dye trousers. If you are seen in jeans, people laugh at you. Due to high demand, huge factories are opening up everywhere to produce these new trousers. Tie and dye specialists are suddenly in high demand, and are attracting huge salaries for their skills. In under a year, 2 million new jobs are created, in just this industry alone, with every sign pointing to increased demand, leading to more people setting up textile factories.

Another example

On any given day, not less than 20 million women in Nigeria have on 'Brazilian hair'.

But what if that style went out of fashion, and is replaced by a rise in demand for traditional hair braiding? And traditional braided wigs?

Oh wait a minute!

Suddenly we have a huge and stunning rise in demand for girls who can braid hair, and make traditional braid wigs!

Suddenly, people start opening large hairdressing centres everywhere to cater for the high demand.

Suddenly hair braiding skills attract a premium, and anyone with experience in it can get a high paying job right away.

The millions of dollars spent on capital flight to Brazil, for 'Brazilian hair' ever month, is suddenly being spent IN NIGERIA, paying indigenes for their braiding skills instead!

I could go on with more examples.

But I'm sure you get the picture.

We are FOOLISH when we sit around and demand that the government should create more jobs.

HOW?

What jobs can they create?

Jobs are created based on demand and supply, not by a politician sitting in an office and saying 'I want to create jobs'.

You cannot create jobs from thin air.

WE the people, must develop strong local demand for locally made goods.

Once THAT happens, employment rate will shoot up to stratospheric levels.

You are myopic in your view and you lack general understanding of economy. You are so fixated on dress and wears. What is percentage of imported clothes and shoe is our GDP and forex.
Can you pls list things we can produce in Nigeria and their contributions to GDP?
Are you aware that some manufacturers are relocating to nearby countries?
Cements and rice are locally produced, can justify why their costs are increasing eith worsening of naira?
If power sector is not fixed, there would not be much difference in prices of imported and local produced items with the same standard?
Ask politicians to stop importing cars, furnitures and other luxurious items?
There are even some items we have to import them because we don't have capacity to produce them locally -drugs, vaccines, electronics etc.

It is YOU that lacks understanding of Economics. I majored in the subject, so kindly ditch such comments.

Fixated I am not, but you are naive if you don't understand the importance of patronage of the local textile industry over foreign imports, and the massive dent in unemployment that could make.

Can you pls list things we can produce in Nigeria and their contributions to GDP?

There is nothing we ''cannot'' produce in Nigeria.

So providing you with 'a list' is unnecessary. The ones that we produce, do YOU buy?

When last did you buy Nigerian made shoes?

Are you aware that some manufacturers are relocating to nearby countries?
Cements and rice are locally produced, can justify why their costs are increasing with worsening of naira?

Inflation is caused by demand outstripping supply. If locally made cement and rice are expensive, it simply means there is lack of competition in the sectors. The more people move into cement and rice manufacturing/processing, the more prices will fall due to increased competition.

If power sector is not fixed, there would not be much difference in prices of imported and local produced items with the same standard?

Stop blaming ''power sector''. INNOSON is manufacturing vehicles with this same power sector. But if YOU prefer to buy Honda Accord than Innoson, he cannot expand his business, and create more employment. And other local manufacturers will be discouraged from entering the car manufacturing sector. It has nothing to do with ''power sector''.

Ask politicians to stop importing cars, furnitures and other luxurious items?

TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND STOP TALKING RUBBISH.

How many politicians are in Nigeria in total?

Are they even up to 5,000?

All the millions of imported cars you see on the streets, are they owned by politicians?

All the Italian furniture and marble we import, do 95% of them not go to private Nigerian citizens?

''Politicians'' and ''our leaders'' are your perennial excuse for EVERYTHING.

Nothing is ever your fault.

There are even some items we have to import them because we don't have capacity to produce them locally -drugs, vaccines, electronics etc.

We produce pharmaceuticals in Nigeria aplenty. We have electronics firms. Zinox Computers is a local computer/tablet/Ipad manufacturer.

You are WRONG that we lack capacity to manufacture these things, and it is that inferior mentality that makes people like YOU see an electronic product made in NIGERIA, and roll your eyes, and head for the Hewlett Packard.

And when you are challenged to change your mentality, you start looking to blame ''politicians' and ''power sector''.

This op is high on some white solid substances....

87%of nigeria can't even afford a local produce let alone foreign products,so what are you saying..

Even some foreign products are more affordable than our local produce eg innosson cars and Toyota cars, this is do to the hard policies and difficulties the manufacturing industries face in Nigeria, you provide your self with all the resources you need, no power supply,no water,, even easy transportation of goods na war...so who's to be blamed?? The masses or your corrupt political elites?....Biko you politicians should stop taking us for fools..

This debate is clearly beyond your scope of knowledge.

Not only 87%.

99%.

Everyone thinks only him is eating in his house and every other Nigerian is starving.

And stop this RUBBISH of listing developmental issues which are common to 80% of nations on earth which comprise developing countries.

That is your excuse for doing nothing and worshiping foreign made goods over your own?

If you had 10,000 dollars, you, like 95% of Nigerians would go for an imported car rather than Innoson.

That is YOUR problem. It has nothing to do with light, water, politicians, Buhari, or any other thing or person you want to blame.

In Nigeria it is ALWAYS someone else's fault. Never yours. After all you are angels. Infallible. Only those politicians who landed from another planet are spoiling everything.

Delusional people.
