Well, here it is. The European Super League was finally officially announced via press release, seen below.

"Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs." The statement reads in part.

Details of the release lists that the following clubs are involved: AC Milan, Arsenal, Atlético, Chelsea, Barcelona, Internazionale, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham. A further three “founding” member clubs are expected to be joining at a later date.

What is the European Super League?

There aren’t many details surrounding how the European Super League will actually work. However, it was the intention for it to rival the Champions League format ahead of the competition’s announcement of their new plans.

There will be 18 to 20 sides and matches will be played midweek with an end of season play-off to determine the winners. It's scheduled to start in the 2022-23 season.

According to The Times, the proposals include:

- The 15 founder clubs sharing an initial 3.5billion (£3.1billion) euro “infrastructure grant” ranging from £310million to £89million per club which can be spent on stadiums, training facilities or “to replace lost stadium-related revenues due to Covid-19”.

- The format would see two groups of 10 clubs who play home and away, with the top four from each group going through to two-legged quarter-finals, semi-finals and a one-legged final.

- Matches would be midweek and clubs would still play in domestic leagues.

There is no official start date, but the European Super League is expecting to push for a start date as soon as possible. In response to FIFA and UEFA’s prior announcement decrying the formation of the European Super League, the collective teams stated that “In the future, the Founding Clubs look forward to consulting with UEFA and FIFA in order to work together”

I won’t mince words. This is nothing but greed, pure and simple. There is no logic, no passion involved except the passion for money. With world football already besieged foreign nations (Hello Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea), this does nothing but further the gap between the average fan and the teams they support. With UEFA expected to expand the Champions League to a potential “Swiss Model”, there is no need for this league. I, for one, am happy that the DFL and its teams are openly opposed the formation of such a league.

In the immediate aftermath of the press release, rumors of a response by UEFA and FIFA have surfaced.

Only dialogue can solve the problem not threat. FIFA is saying they will ban all the players of those clubs involved. You and I know if that happens, FIFA itself would be dead.
