On April 20, 2021, the newly re-elected and sixth term President of Chad, Marshal Idriss Deby Itno was announced dead by the country's Army spokesperson General Azem Bermandoa Aguona after fighting rebels in the northern part of the country during the weekend. President Deby who has been in power for more than 30 years was assassinated a day after the provisional election results projected he would win a sixth term in office.
