Bauchi Govt. To Compensate the Victims of Post-Election Violence

The Bauchi State Government has promised to pay compensation to owners of places of worship and other properties destroyed during the post-election violence in the state.

The state governor, Isa Yuguda made the promise on Friday in Bauchi when the State chapter of Igbo community visited him.

He stressed that the incident was not ethnic or religious crisis but a political misunderstanding created by some few individuals which led to the killing of innocent people and destruction of properties.

Yuguda maintained that perpetrators were not after Christians only but supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the act as undemocratic.

Places of worship were burnt and supporters of PDP were killed their properties were destroyed, even SSG`s (Secretary to the State Government) house that contained over 90 people was completely burnt.

No PDP supporter fought or harassed anybody during the exercise, I believe it is a deal to frustrate our supporters by some few unpatriotic citizens,'' he said.

He pleaded with the Igbos in the state to remain calm and not to relocate to other parts of the country, adding Bauchi is their indigenous State.

You have every right to acquire an indigenous certificate and even now if any of you who needs it in Bauchi Local Government, I will give him. Your children must enjoy free education and health, your wives will also enjoy the free health and any other thing that is being enjoyed by the citizens,`` he said.

Responding, the President of Igbo community, Bauchi Chapter, Chibike Umesiri commended the governor for his concern, describing him as a caring leader.

Umesiri said that he was struggling to make things better for his members that were camped in the barracks and other secured places. He agreed that the violence was not religious but political because most of the perpetrators were after supporters of the PDP.

He urged the governor to provide them with more security and incentives to enable them go back to their houses and continue with their business.
