The State Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists, Abia State Chapter, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, is calling on the Government, the society to see Information as public good as well as create an enabling environment for Journalists to deliver on their mandate of keeping the society abreast of happenings.

Comrade Ndukwe, who made the plea while interacting with correspondent Izuchukwu Nwokoma to mark this year's World Press Freedom Day, with the theme 'Information as Public Good", said as purveyors of information, it is pertinent for the society to always open up to journalists, grant them access to key Information to avoid fake news or unverified reports that seem to be on the increase.

Comrade Ndukwe who acknowledged the sacrifices and roles played by the Press in fostering development, stressed the need for all to see the Media as partners in development and grant them Information that will lead to the advancement of society, adding that media workers are working for the good of the society despite challenges and threat posed by the COVID-19 and insecurity in Nigeria.

He called on Media owners to pay greater attention to remuneration of journalists, pointing out that they deserve better pay to be able to carry out their responsibilities just as he urged media operators to regularly organise training and retraining programmes for media practitioners to keep them abreast of latest trends in the journalism profession.

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated this day to ensure the protection and safety of the Press in the face of attacks against its independence, to discuss journalistic ethics and to celebrate journalists who gave their lives in the pursuit of truth.
