Zebras are African equines with black-and-white striped coats. There are three species of zebras that still exist: the Grévy's zebra, the plains zebra, and the mountain zebra. Zebras, horses, and asses all belong to the genus Equus, and the three are the only living members of the family Equidae. Zebra stripes come in a variety of patterns, each one unique.

Several theories have been proposed to explain the function of these stripes, with the majority of evidence supporting their use as a form of protection against biting flies. Zebras are found in a variety of habitats throughout eastern and southern Africa, including savannahs, grasslands, woodlands, shrublands, and mountainous areas.
