HR Professionals are key to the organization as they help an organization deliver its corporate strategy and objectives by effectively recruiting and developing people and managing their performance. Human resource as a career can be rewarding- financially and job satisfaction.

Although, most people get into HR because they are a ‘people person’. They soon get disappointed because the HR profession requires you to be an objective professional as your job will be to remain fair to both the employees and the employer.

This can be a tricky place as business decisions drive lots of the demand for human resources in an organization. You may have to fire a couple of people in your career.

So, before you make the decision to investing on how to start a career in HR in Nigeria and become an HR professional, understand the functions of an HR professional so there are no surprises.

According to SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), there are six HR Key Functions



Human Resources- As we all know, the most important asset in an organization is its people. This HR function requires an understanding of the kind of people an organization to succeed, and how many and at what time. Human Resource Planning involves not only the current needs of the organization but not the future needs.

Any HR professional worth his/her pay is able to plan strategically and be proactive.
Talent Acquisition. Attracting and selecting the right employees usually starts with the organization’s brand. Positioning your company as an attractive employer is advantageous and a core function in HR.

Total Rewards. A solid compensation and benefit system is instrumental in attracting the right people. Structuring benefits and salary scale will have an impact on the organization’s ability to compete for quality talents.

Learning and Development. Orientation, development, and training is integral to the company’s readiness for the future. HR Professionals set the budget for learning and development, strategic career development plans to increase the value and productivity employees bring to the organization

Performance Management. HR professionals set clear purpose and process for performance evaluation. Good performance management required leadership, goal-setting, results tracking and improvement plans.

Employment Law. There are policies and HR legislation that should be in place in every organization to cater for the needs and rights of every employee. The HR Professional is responsible for ensuring that these policies are created and adhered. Every employee must feel safe and protected in their work environment.
