Its like this. .

You're a hacker, quite good, knows a programming language (lets say PHP), 1 or 2 scripting languages (perl, python), have a good knowledge of Network protocols, always curious (u jst wanna knw aw things work), have the drive/desire to learn new stuffs, PERSISTENT (the I-give-up spirit aint in yhu), yhu know how "stuffs" work (right from "Typing a URL" to how it gets to show on your PC), U aint a "Normal user" (Yhu don't jst view web pages. .yhu go ahead to view source, check the mechanisms on d page, check d GET/POST requests, get to know aw data is retrieved from the web server, try to see if you can retrieve more than just what the web dev wants you to see and so on), check if dere's an exploit pertaining to the webserver, see if yhu can load a payload, had r00t access, defaced sites in the past (smile behind yo PC when the news comes up a popular blog) OR perhaps you're in a wireless cafe and the noob administrator wants you to pay N500 per hour and u wanna spend like 5-6hrs of which u dnt ve much on yhu! Dyu go ahead to try & work around it? Lets say prolly sniff the network. .get other users access details? sniff the network. .get the mac addy nd change yo mac addy to the victims'? Or lets say its using the WEP key encryption & yhu go ahead to crack it?!

Or lets say yhu ve close to 1000dbs of diff sites on yo PC. .and yhu don't have up to N10,000 grin in yo account. .Yo "hacking skill" doesn't seem to be paying as yhu want to be strictly "legit". .nD yhu just feel there must be a way outta the situation. .Whaddyu then do?

Its simple. .Be a Penetration Tester. But this time around, you don't just hack for fun, you hack to put food on yo table, hack to feed yo family nd def. ve more left for raining days. . grin

"And to me" - the difference between hackers & pen testers IS "pen testers are white-collared hackers". . You have all the skills to be called a hacker but can you document your findings? Can you proffer solutions? Can you advise a company on what to/what not to do? Can you break down the whole hacking jargons and explain in concise terms to executive members(with no knowledge of hacking) that their web server/web application/Network/System is/are vulnerable? Now that's just the difference.

nD thats hacking as a career. smiley You get paid doing what you love doing. .
