Reasons Why Nigerian Students Should Learn At Home by TundeRotimi: 6:03pm On May 24, 2021
It is no longer news that the COVID-19 pandemic forever altered educational systems across the world. In Nigeria, schools were closed for almost 8 months, leading to millions of students being cut off from learning, while others had to learn at home.

Now, even though schools have resumed, many students still struggle with adjusting back to school life, connecting with peers, learning in class, and sitting for exams. In addition to these, the high level of insecurity in the country has forced many parents to withdraw their students from schools and settle for homeschooling.

The reality is that post-COVID-19, learning at home has come to stay, and the benefits are enormous, especially for students in Nigeria. Students get to learn at their pace with or without a teacher, evaluate their own learning through quizzes and games, and have access to a wide range of resources and materials beyond what the traditional teacher in the classroom offers.

Additionally, learning at home is affordable – online education platforms are either cheap or free, making them easily affordable to students in low-income communities. Similarly, students do not have to make the trip to a physical location and are therefore kept safe from violence (insurgency in the Northeast, kidnapping, etc.), disease (COVID-19), and many other ills that plague our nation. Learning at home definitely has a myriad of advantages.

This is perhaps why there has been a surge in the birth of ed-tech platforms that offer complementary and remedial learning for students. One of such platforms that launched recently is the Learn at Home audio e-learning platform by Data Science Nigeria and Malezi, sponsored by the Mastercard Foundation, an innovative where students across Nigeria get free and unlimited learning by listening to classes prepared by expert teachers using the approved NERDC curriculum, students also get to listen to a collection of solved past questions from 2009 to 2020 for exams like WAEC, NECO, Common Entrance, BECE, and JAMB. Even better, learning is absolutely free and only consumes minimal data, and if you’re on MTN, learning does not consume any data and can be done using any type of device- even the most basic phones.
