Facts About Canterbury, United Kingdom. by Capital2021(m): 11:57am On Jun 04, 2021
A town rich in history would surely have facts that would be interesting to know about and need not to say that Canterbury is one of those places in the United Kingdom that have a rich history. Today, we take our spotlight away from the school and shine it on the city because in the end you'd live in the city even though you are in the school. So, not much talk, dive into our pick of five facts below:

Canterbury is Home to the country's oldest school
The King's School in Canterbury is the oldest school in the country. The school was built in 597 CE (common era) and is believed to be the oldest still-functioning school in all of Europe.

Canterbury is Full of students
If you have actually been to Canterbury, you will not be surprised by this one as it is a popular university town, but the ratio of students to general residents is the highest in the country. In a 2001 census, it was found that 22 per cent of those between the ages of 16-74 were full-time students with the average in the UK being only seven per cent. In 2001, it was estimated that there were 31,000 students in the city which has now increased in the 20 years since to around 40,000.

Canterbury has Received the Tour de France
The famous cycling race the 'Tour de France' has passed through the city twice, once in 1994 and again in 2007. During the 2007 stage one of the races finished in Canterbury and it was estimated it brought a £40million boost to the economy. It was one of the most-watched stages in the tour's history at the time in 2007, with 189 cyclists competing.

Canterbury Music
Canterbury created its own genre of music named Canterbury Sound or Canterbury Scene a new genre of music got its start in Canterbury. The genre is based around groups that rose to fame in the late 60s and early 70s in progressive rock, avant-garde and jazz. Some of the bands of note during this time were Soft Machine, Caravan, Matching Mole, Egg, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Gilgamesh, Soft Heap, Khan and In Cahoots. Eventually, the terms came to mean a subgenre or musical style rather than the regional group of musicians it was originally meant for.

Labour Canterbury
Canterbury is the only constituency to have a Labour member of parliament in Kent. Many believe this is due to the large student population who voted for Rosie Duffield in 2017.

There you have it, we're sure you noted that they have the most population of students and the students' voices do matter. So, what else do you want in a city that has a great rich heritage and an amazing citadel of learning. We can and we would get you there with relative ease.
